Langley TimesSilver for metro United Apr 29 2007 Tied at three goals apiece with five minutes remaining in the championship game, Richmond was able to convert two late opportunities to win the gold medal over Langley United’s U14 metro team.
The two squads were competing at a futsal tournament at Capilano College earlier this month.
Futsal is an indoor version of soccer in which teams play five a side.
It is a very high tempo game that provides little time and space and requires quick counter-attacking tactics.
“The team was exceptional at controlling the ball in tight areas and passing quickly,” said assistant coach Bruce Bates.
“(They played) with pace, which was a big factor in their success.”
Langley entered the tournament to see what the game was like, not realizing that many of the other provinces besides B.C. have organized futsal leagues running year-round.
“We were up against teams that were very organized and tactically prepared,” Bates said.
In the round robin, Langley beat Richmond 7-5 and then edged Ontario 2-1.
Having already qualified for the next day’s final, the squad lost 4-1 to Alberta.
Playing Richmond again in the final, the game was tight and tied at three until near the end as both goaltenders played outstanding. Matthew Kidwell was Langley’s goalie.
But Langley would surrender the two late goals to earn the silver medal.
