Sytin tops futsal scorers table

Saturday, 28 April 2007

by Paul Saffer

from Murcia

FC Shakhtar Donetsk may have been pipped to the UEFA Futsal Cup final four by eventual winners MFK Dinamo Moskva, but their prolific Ukrainian international striker Serhiy Sytin finished the competition as overall top scorer.

Double figures
Shakhtar were the only team to avoid defeat by Dinamo in Europe this season, coming back from four down to draw 4-4, though the Russian champions still topped their Elite round group. Sytin scored twice in that game, and eight more in the competition, the only man to reach double figures.

Close contenders
He was two clear of FC Dorozhnik Minsk's Dzmitry Kadakou, Zoran Leveski of KMF Alfa Parf Skopje and Futsal Club Gödöllö player János Madarász, who managed eight. From the teams that reached the final four, Dinamo's Kelson and ElPozo Murcia FS's Vinicius Bacaro both struck six. Kelson, Dinamo's last-minute final hero Pula and Action 21 Charleroi captain Karim Chaibai all scored twice in the Murcia event.

Duda vows Murcia will return

Saturday, 28 April 2007

by Paul Saffer & David Bańo

from Murcia

ElPozo Murcia FS coach Duda was a relieved man as despite a superb performance from Action 21 Charleroi goalkeeper Eder Fehrmann, the final four hosts were able to equalise late on and then prevail 4-3 on penalties for third place to make up for their heartbreaking semi-final loss to Boomerang Interviú on Thursday. Charleroi coach Christian Vavadio was taking positives from the game as his young side came close to a surprise win.

Christian Vavadio, Action 21 Charleroi coach
My players put on a great performance. We have faced one of the best teams in the world. My players’ attitude has been amazing. I'm very satisfied about how they have played, but I'm sad because they are sad not to have won a game here. We were very close to victory. But we only had seven players, while they had 12 players of the highest standard. They could even afford to play with their second goalkeeper. I take from this tournament the progress of my players and their potential to develop even more, which makes me very hopeful for the future.

Duda, ElPozo Murcia FS coach
The penalty shoot-out was very exciting for the public and at the end the team who wanted to win more has won. Today the ball did not want to go in. Their goalkeeper was extraordinary. So in the end we had to go on penalties and we won. The game was as we expected, but we thought we would score more easily and it has been quite hard. Nothing can take away Thursday's disappointment. But now we will concentrate on the Spanish league, in order to win it and be back in Europe again next year.

Hosts hit the spot for bronze

Saturday, 28 April 2007

by Paul Saffer

from Palacio de Deportes de Murcia

UEFA Futsal Cup final four hosts ElPozo Murcia FS ended the tournament on a high as they beat Action 21 Charleroi 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw over 40 minutes to claim third place.

Murcia prevail
Murcia's hopes of overall victory had been ended by a last-second Boomerang Interviú goal on Thursday after Charleroi had lost 3-1 to MFK Dinamo Moskva. Charleroi's inexperienced team had done well just to reach the semi-finals and led today through Karim Chaibai but Vinicius Elías equalised and Murcia had the better of the shoot-out.

Chaibai scores
Charleroi were taking no risks over key Brazilians André Vanderlei and Liliu, and their early pressure paid off with eight minutes gone when a long-range effort from captain Chaibai beat Caio, promoted above Juanjo to start in the Murcia goal. Caio was superb to break up a Chaibai one-two with Jhonny Van Melkebeke and Murcia were doing plenty of attacking of their own and Mauricio was unlucky only to hit the post with a low shot. Murcia ended the first half strongly, Joel Queirós threatening on more than one occasion.

Late equaliser
Early in the second half, Caio was called into action again to deny Jhonny after a flowing move involving Lúcio Rosa and Chaibai, while Charleroi goalkeeper Eder Fehrmann did brilliantly to keep out a Kike shot. Murcia were on top but getting frustrated, Raúl Manjón's 30th-minute volley agonisingly close and Fehrmann's acrobatics denying Chaibai, Joel, Vinicius Elías and Mauricio. But with less than three minutes remaining Vinicius astutely finished from inside the area after Cobeta’s pass to equalise.

Juanjo stops
The home side nearly won it at the death through Vinicius, but with no extra time scheduled, spot-kicks were needed and the newly-introduced Juanjo saved from Jhonny and Lúcio to give Murcia bronze. Now the priority for both these teams is to defend their respective national titles in their forthcoming championship play-offs to ensure a return to the UEFA Futsal Cup next season.

Rudnev salutes Dinamo

Saturday, 28 April 2007

by Paul Saffer & David Bańo

from Murcia

Having led MFK Dinamo Moskva to victory in the UEFA Futsal Cup final - following two consecutive defeats at this stage for the Russian club - coach Yuri Rudnev said his players' "determination and attitude" brought them the dramatic last-minute victory against holders Boomerang Interviú. Beaten coach Jesús Candelas, who had won his two previous finals in 2004 and 2006, admitted Dinamo were worthy victors and vowed to return next season as Spanish champions.

Yuri Rudnev, Dinamo coach
I'm completely exhausted. I have neither energy nor emotions left. We have achieved our objective. The players deserve this victory. We have played against the best team in the world. We had a great first half. In the second half, we were struggling physically and that's where our opponents started to show their qualities. The determination and attitude our players have shown tonight were the key to victory.

Jesús Candelas, Boomerang coach
Congratulations to Dinamo because they deserve to win this trophy. We have faced a team that has played and defended very well. We did not have a good first half and we allowed them to believe they could win. Normally in a final, after five minutes, you should have shown your opponents that you are in the game, but we did not do so today. I'm totally satisfied with my players. We improved during the game and that is an attitude to praise. We have failed in the little details. If we'd had more possession in the first half, we would have had more chances. It's not the end, we like this competition and we will be back next year.

Pula pounces to crown Dinamo

Saturday, 28 April 2007

by Paul Saffer

from Palacio de Deportes de Murcia

MFK Dinamo became only the second non-Spanish team to win the UEFA Futsal Cup as Pula’s last-minute goal ended the reign of Boomerang Interviú in Murcia.

Stepanov unbeatable
Dinamo had lost the last two finals, 12 months ago beaten by Boomerang as they took the trophy for the second time. With two minutes to go Neto equalised for the holders to cancel out a first-half Kelson goal, but Pula - who had scored on his competition debut in the semi-finals two days ago - was the man of the moment.

Dinamo start strongly
Unsurprisingly, both coaches stayed loyal to the 12 that took them past Thursday's semi-finals; Boomerang beating hosts ElPozo Murcia FS 3-2 with a last-gasp goal and Dinamo defeating Action 21 Charleroi 3-1. After Spanish athletics hero Juan Carlos Higuero took the ceremonial kick-off, Dinamo started at pace and in the second minute a succession of shots ended with Pelé being denied brilliantly by Boomerang goalkeeper Luis Amado. At the other end Gabriel was unlucky not to turn in Marquinho's cross.

Boomerang regroup
An early time-out called by Boomerang coach Jesús Candelas seemed to invigorate the holders and Schumacher and Julio both forced Pavel Stepanov to make stops. Edgar Bertoni also went close from distance while Pelé again forced Amado into action after combining with Kelson.

Kelson strikes
It was Kelson, part of the only previous non-Spanish success when his former club Charleroi beat Dinamo in the 2005 final, that struck on 13 minutes. After a Dinamo time-out Cirilo passed a free-kick to Konstantin Maevskiy, who squared for the Brazilian to lash in. Daniel, the last second hero against Murcia, nearly equalised immediately for Boomerang but Stepanov kept out his strong effort. The goalkeeper also blocked a Neto shot while Amado was again superb to tip away Pula's drive after a mazy run and the Spain No1 also denied Cirilo.

Neto denied
Boomerang were on top after the break but their first chances were struck over by Schumacher and Daniel, before Stepanov smothered an Andreu shot. At the other end Cirilo found Tatu but Amado again got in the way. The Dinamo goalkeeper was next in action with a double-save to deny Neto and Stepanov also kicked away a Marquinho drive.

Further efforts
Dinamo were happy to play deep and hit Boomerang on the break, but the Spanish side were still finding ways through the defence but not past Stepanov. Bertoni's angled effort was saved by the goalkeeper's legs and the Italian also hit the crossbar from distance. Gabriel fed Boomerang's Joan in the area but as he turned and shot Stepanov was there to block again, while Marquinho only just missed the target with a strong strike.

Dramatic end
There was room for Dinamo to attack and Pelé made Amado dive and save, but Neto - on for the Boomerang No1 - drew Boomerang level with a shot into the top corner after a combination with Schumacher. However, although Daniel then went close, it was Dinamo who produced the last-minute winner through Pula who took his chance with aplomb. Henrique was sent off late on, but soon was back to join the Dinamo celebrations.

Winning feeling has Pula purring

Sunday, 29 April 2007

by Paul Saffer

from Murcia

There hardly can be a better way to make a European debut than to score six minutes into a semi-final. And that can only be topped by striking in the dying seconds of the final itself. That is the story of MFK Dinamo Moskva player Pula and his superb campaign in the UEFA Futsal Cup final four.

Recent signing
The 26-year-old, also known as Caetano Wagner Pereira, only recently joined Dinamo from Russian rivals MFK Arbat Moskva, having previously played for Brazilian giants AA Carlos Barbosa. But he has made some impact on his bow in this competition in Murcia this week.

'Best feeling'
First he announced himself to the continent with his opener in the last four against Action 21 Charleroi, setting his side on the way to a 3-1 victory on Thursday. Then yesterday, not long after holders Boomerang Interviú had equalised in the final to seemingly force extra time, Pula struck a perfect shot with only 26 seconds remaining. "It is the best feeling I have ever had," Pula told uefa.com. "I am very happy and very grateful to God for giving me the chance to be so happy."

Dinamo delight
Pula may have an unblemished record in UEFA Futsal Cup finals, but the same does not go for Dinamo who had lost at this stage in 2005 to Charleroi and 2006 against Boomerang. The importance of his contribution is now lost on the Brazilian. "I feel absolutely wonderful," Pula said. "I know just how much it means to the club and I feel very happy for all my team-mates."
