Stabroek NewsEnglish/Kashif & Shanghai Futsal Silver Shattas, Uprising progressSaturday, May 19th 2007Silver Shattas whipped Pouderoyen Young Achievers and Uprising edged Western Tigers to earn themselves the first two spots in round two of the English/Kashif and Shanghai Futsal tournaments while GFC and Flamingoes secured first wins in the tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Thursday night.
GFC edged Melanie Lions 2-1, Flamingoes defeated Camptown 3-1, Silver Shattas whipped Pouderoyen Young Achievers 2-0 and Uprising edged Western Tigers 2-1.
In the opening encounter GFC's Sherwin Jacobs's strike gave his team an early advantage over Melanie. The Lions roared on numerous occasions but were stopped in their tracks by the excellent goalkeeping of Prince Giddings. GFC led 1-0 at half-time.
Sixteen minutes into the second half Rodwell Wellington scored GFC's second goal while Quincy Adams scored a consolation goal for the Lions in the final minute of play.
In the second game Camptown skipper Dexter Mollyneaux, scored first but Flamingoes replied with three first half strikes that effectively settled the outcome.
Flamingoes' Errol Squires sunk the ball into the net with ease to level the score while Junior Lynch sent his team ahead with a remarkable goal which sent a buzz among the large crowd.
In the dying stages of the first half Camptown received a penalty but failed to score and Lynch on the counter attack blasted in a shot which had goal written all over it.
The second half was a bit of a struggle for both teams, highlighted by fouls and missed penalties.
Camptown's Troy Prescod received a second yellow card that sent him off the field in the 28th minute of the game while Flamingoes threw away three goal scoring opportunities in what was for them a very disappointing display.
In the third game of the night Silver Shattas continued their winning trend by recording a 2-0 win against Pouderoyen Young Achievers to send them packing. Shattas's Michael Wills and Jermain Mc Bean each booted in a goal for their team.
In the final game of the night Western Tigers fired in the first goal against Uprising in just six minutes into the first half, compliments of Shermon David. After that it all went downhill for both teams as they were nowhere near to scoring goals.
There was much scuffling at the northern end of the court between the two teams which resulted in Uprising's Rensford Coleridge receiving a red card to bring the first half to a dramatic end.
Uprising regrouped after the break and Omali Nassy scored twice to give his team a come-from-behind 2-1 win.
Prior to the start of that match five females were selected for a penalty kick off, with the prize of an electric iron donated by Lens Optical. Four out of the five females each booted a first goal but in the second round it was Odessa Caleb who shot the second goal to win the iron. The presentation was done by Kashif Mohamed.
The tournament continues tonight with Northern Rangers versus Pouderoyen, Santos versus Mocha Champs, Black Pearl versus Blueberry Hill and Pele versus BV/Triumph
