The Dragons Prepare for UEFA Futsal Cup Qualifiers Deeside Dragons, the Welsh National Futsal Champions, played host to Futsal Wrexham in an entertaining friendly match in Queensferry on 20th May as part of their preparations for next season's UEFA Futsal Cup, when they hope to join their English, Scottish and Irish counterparts competing in next August's Preliminary Round of the Competition, and so become the first Welsh Futsal Club to compete in Europe.
In addition to winning the first National Championships in February the Deeside Dragons also won both the Welsh Futsal League Cup and the Welsh Futsal Cup, and Sunday's game gave them an excellent opportunity for a good, competitive yet friendly practice match against a team with clear potential.
Futsal Wrexham comprise a sound group of players who play the game in exactly the right spirit, defending in depth and attacking with pace, and they will surely feature strongly in coming months as Futsal in Wales continues to develop.
However, Sunday's game saw the Dragons at the top of their game, and the Champions were able to show their international credentials in full, not only in respect of their well developed technical ability and tactical awareness, but also in terms of their formidable fitness levels, and they eventually ran out convincing 16-4 winners.
UEFA are currently issuing their annual invitations to Europe's National Football Associations to enter their Champion Clubs into next month's Draw for the UEFA Futsal Cup, and the Dragons await the formal "go ahead" from the Football Association of Wales to join their British and Irish rivals in Europe's showpiece event. In the meantime the Club is looking to extend its' preparations with a friendly match next month against the newly crowned Champions of Ireland, Shamrock Rovers, in what promises to be a highly enjoyable encounter.
