Thursday, May 24th 2007

Police, Alpha United and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) recorded victories while Conquerors and Beacons played to a draw on the sixth night of the English/Kashif and Shanghai promotions Futsal tournament played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Tuesday night.

Police edged Winners Connection 4-3;GDF triumphed over Amelia's Ward 7-3 and Alpha United demolished the Brazilians 7-0 while Fruta Conquerors and Beacons played to a 3-all draw.

In the opening encounter Beacons took an early lead, courtesy of Nigel Denny. Denny scored in the second minute and again in the sixth while Jermaine Gillis booted home the third to give his team the upper-hand.

But Conquerors much like Liverpool did in the 2005 Champions League final, regrouped and scored three goals, through Dellon Williams who netted a hat-trick.

In the second game the rule of the lawmen prevailed as Police trounced Winner's Connection 4-3 to earn a spot in the second round of the competition with two goals each coming from Warren Gilkes and Dwayne Jacobs for Police, while Winners Connection's Shawn Gittens scored a hat-trick.

In the third match of the night it was the GDF's turn to show their might as they crushed Amelia's Ward, whose three goals came in the second half.

Seon Bradley booted in a helmet-trick while Rensford Williams, Shawn Hector and Shawn Arthur scored a goal each for GDF.

Travis Waterton, Jermaine Corlette and Andrew Lambert were the scorers for Amelia's Ward.

The Brazilians versus Alpha United game never lived up to its billing as the Brazilians failed to make inroads into a united Alpha team and were thrashed 0-7.

Alpha's win was orchestrated by Andrew Murray jnr. who booted in two goals while Philbert Persaud, Dwayne Daniels, Gordon Henry, Sherwin Vincent and Travis Maarten each took one.

Meanwhile, tonight's action will see Flamingo versus Young Achievers, Uprising versus GFC, Western Tigers versus Melanie Lions and Camptown versus Silver Shattas.

So far six teams, Uprising with nine points, Silver Shattas with six, Santos six, Pele with 10, GDF with 12 and Police on eight points have secured a spot in the round of 16.
