English/ Kashif and Shanghai Futsal tournament in limbo after stabbing incident

Monday, May 28th 2007

The status of the English/Kashif and Shanghai Futsal football tournament is in limbo after a stabbing incident Saturday night left a spectator injured.

According to reports the incident occurred around 10.30pm and resulted in panic-stricken spectators attempting to flee the venue.

Informed sources told Stabroek Sport yesterday that within minutes of the incident, which took place with approximately two minutes remaining in the third game, heavily armed policemen swooped on the venue where they were seen talking to Aubrey `Shanghai' Major, one of the promoters.

Stabroek Sport was also informed that the policemen also spoke to supervisor of the facility Basheer Khan.

Neither Khan nor Director of Sport Neil Kumar was available for comment yesterday while Public Relations Officer of the English/Kashif and Shanghai organisation Franklyn Wilson told Stabroek Sport that he was not aware of any new developments that would have taken place in light of the incident on Saturday night.

Wilson said he was also unaware if the organization had met to discuss the incident as he had not received any update as yet, but mentioned that the tournament would go ahead as scheduled.

But informed sources told Stabroek Sport that Kumar had suggested that the tournament be suspended.

Stabroek Sport understands that there was a meeting among the NSC top brass yesterday morning when Kumar had suggested that the tournament be suspended following a report from the supervisor.

It is not known whether the organizers had breached any of the contractual agreements pertaining to the rental of the venue, but Stabroek Sport was reliably informed that there were no uniformed policemen on duty at the time of the incident.

And in a separate incident Stabroek Sport understands that another person was injured after he was struck on the head with a bottle.

Meanwhile, in matches played Pele and Santos continued their winning streaks; Mocha Champs progressed to the final sixteen while BV/Triumph recorded their first win on what was the eighth night of competition.

Mocha Champs edged Blueberry Hill 2-1; Pele drubbed Northern Rangers 6-0; BV triumphed over Pouderoyen Young Achievers 4-3 and Santos demolished Black Pearl 10-2.

In the opening encounter Sherwin Hope booted in a goal in the 12th minute of the first half to put Mocha ahead while Lyliton Ramsey struck in the 20th minute to send Mocha further in the lead.

After numerous attempts Blueberry finally gained a consolation goal through Ray Bobb-Semple.

Pele continued to display their dominance as they combined their team efforts to sweep the Northern Rangers 6-0 through goals from Rawle Jones, Calvin Shepherd, Quincy Hemerdin, Solomon Austin and Travis Grant.

In the BV/Pouderoyen encounter, Pouderoyen's Garlen Lewis scored a hat-trick but it was not enough as a double from Shawn Daniels and single strikes from Colin Jones and Eon Dooker saw BV/Triumph winning by the odd goal in seven.

In the final match-up for the night Santos prevailed over Black Pearl by 10 goals to two.

Santos's victory was orchestrated by Andy Duke, Wendell St. Hill and Shem Porter who booted in two goals each while Seon Mc Kenzie, Dwayne Mc Lennon, Quincy Bourne and Wendell Fredrick contributed one goal each.
