Play Ball! NSC gives reprieve; Futsal to resume with new contract and rules

With the intention of giving the organizers of the inter-club five-a-side Futsal football competition a second chance already signalled, Director of Sport Neil Kumar foresees a quick resumption of the English/Kashif and Shanghai tournament which has so far seen its share of violence and other unwanted activities.

Kumar met with Aubrey 'Shanghai' Major, one part of the three-headed promotional team which also includes Kashif Muhammad and Frank `English' Parris yesterday and, after making known his displeasure with the current state of affairs, informed the promotional group that a new contract was to be drafted and signed before the competition could be restarted.

"That new contract would contain new and unambiguous rules in addition to strengthening the ones that were in the previous contract that was entered into by the promoters and the NSC," Kumar told Stabroek Sport yesterday.

The NSC's legal people have already begun preparing the new document which will apply to all persons and promotional groups looking to rent the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Kumar said when the document was completed it would be circulated to all the Commission members who would then vote on its adoptiong.

While not wanting to get into the details of the new contract until its adoption, Kumar said if the new rules are not adhered to then the promotional group or any other that breaks these rules in the future, would be blacklisted from using the facility. Major, when contacted about the new developments said the group was willing to abide by the new contract. He said it would be no problem to meet whatever new conditions were stipulated by the NSC as the promoters were now ready to deal with any eventualities at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. He pointed out that one condition, uniformed police officers at the venue, was already in place. With this compromise, if the NSC's legal eagle can complete the contract and the Commissioners approve it in time, the tournament is set to resume on Saturday when the final games of the preliminary round will be contested. The competition was brought to a halt on Monday by the Director of Sport who cited a stabbing incident, the smoking of cigarettes and other illicit drugs at the venue and several other infractions.
