U.S. FUTSAL TEAM FALLS 9-1 TO THREE-TIME WORLD CHAMPIONS BRAZIL
Defender Pat White Notches Only Tally In Defeat, While Netminder Scott Hileman Post 21 Saves In First-Ever Appearance For USA

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (August 24, 2002) ? The U.S. Futsal National Team fell to the three-time FIFA World Champions Brazil 9-1 on Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Three-Nation U.S. Futsal Invitational at the Bradley Center.
U.S. defender Pat White (Milwaukee Wave ? MISL) scored the only goal for the Americans in the loss, while goalkeeper Scott Hileman (Baltimore Blast ? MISL) posted 21 saves in his first-ever international appearance for the USA.
The U.S. defeat was the first in an international match in 2002 and only the second in the last three years.
?Obviously, we are not pleased about the result but the thing we need to continue to do is to play against the top teams in the world.? said U.S. Futsal National Team Head Coach Keith Tozer. ?Hopefully, this is a learning experience that will only get better for us as the time goes on.?
The crowd of 1,507 saw the Samba Kings open the scoring in the second minute, when midfielder Manual Tobias took a one-time pass from teammate Adalberto Nunes Da Silva just outside the U.S. penalty area and fired it past goalkeeper Hileman for the 1-0 lead.
Brazil made it 3-0 with back-to-back tallies as Tobias? cross in the eighth minute was redirected into the American goal by midfielder Brian Loftin (Milwaukee Wave ? MISL) for the own goal, while 60 seconds later Brazilian forward Vinicius Teixeira added to the scoring with an unassisted tally.
The Samba Kings scored their fourth goal of the match with four minutes remaining before the intermission (16th minute) as defender Marcelo Antunes Marinho stole the ball from the U.S. defense and blasted a low shot past netminder Hileman for the 4-0 edge.
In the second half, Brazil continued their control of the match as Nunes Da Silva notched his first of second tallies on the day as he increased the lead to 5-0 just seconds after the kickoff.
The Samba Kings increased their lead to 7-0 as Teixeira and Tobias earned their second tallies of the match in the 25th and 27th minute, respectively.
The U.S. avoided the shutout in the 32nd minute as forward Lee Tschantret (Baltimore Blast ? MISL) fired a shot from 10 meters out and then redirected over the head of the Brazilian ?keeper Angelo Travi Guerra by Pat White into the goal to make it 7-1.
Brazil closed out the scoring with two consecutive tallies in a two-minute span as defender Fabiano Assad scored in the 37th minute, while Nunes Da Silva added another two minutes later for the 9-1 final.
The Americans end the Three-Nation U.S. Futsal Invitational on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 25), when they meet CONCACAF rival Mexico at the Bradley Center at 5 p.m. CT. Prior the USA-Mexico encounter, Brazil will meet the Tri-Colores in an earlier game set for 2 p.m. CT tomorrow afternoon.
Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer and played with five-man teams on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, unlike the traditional sport of U.S. indoor soccer played with six-man squads and walls. Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico and Ronaldo grew up playing the game and credit Futsal with developing their skills. U.S. Futsal is under the banner of U.S. Soccer, which is the governing body for the sport in the United States.
