Calvin Roberts Saturday, June 16th 2007 Queenstown Community High School duly won the National Sports Commission sponsored National Inter-Secondary School Futsal competition when they defeated Lodge Secondary School 3-1 yesterday at the National Gymnasium.
In front of a very vociferous crowd which were rooting for the Lodge boys, Kwame Alfred with two first half strikes silenced the crowd, but Daniel Wilson responded just before the whistle went for half time.
At the commencement of the second half, Queenstown brought on their star player Deon Alfred, who also happens to be the most-goal scorer of the competition, and he lived up to expectations with a wonderful goal after being given a through ball from his namesake Kwame.
The boys from Lodge tried several shots at their opponents' goal but some deft touches by the tournament's best goalkeeper, Joshua Meredith, helped keep the score line the way it was until the final whistle.
In the third place playoff, Tucville Secondary School defeated St. George's High School by a 6-1 margin. Trevon Lythcott and Kenue Lagadeau both scored two goals whilst Fitzroy Weatherspoon and Pernell Schultz had one each for Tucville.
St George's lone goal came off the boot of Darren Benjamin.
At the presentation ceremony which followed, Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, highlighted the fact that his Ministry was delighted to be a part of the competition. Dr. Anthony said he has noticed the Futsal fever catching on in Guyana.
"If we want to advance in sports, we have to have a certain level of discipline. I was appalled at the discipline displayed by you the young people who are the future of this country. You cannot go anywhere, and reach certain heights if you are not disciplined," he said.
Dr. Anthony further charged the small gathering which included National Sports Commission (NSC) chairman Conrad Plummer and Director of Sport, Neil Kumar that they must work hard to gain the necessary success they need in life.
"Nothing comes easy (sic) in life. So you must work hard to get what you want. I someday want to see you all or some of you playing a Futsal competition in the Sports Hall with a senior team."
Plummer in his short address, endorsed the Minister's comments and also said how happy he was for the organizer, Dennis 'Chow' Hunte to run off such a smooth tournament with much success.
He, like the Minister before him, also congratulated the teams that participated, but had more praise for the victors.
Apart from the winner and runners-up trophies, there was also the third place trophy awarded to the Tucville Secondary School, the Most Valuable Player to Jermaine Leitch from Queenstown, Fair Play trophy to St. George's Secondary School and the best goalkeeper prize to Queenstown's custodian Joshua Meredith.
