Light at the end of the Futsal tunnel?

By Duane Fowler

Friday, June 22nd 2007

There may be a light at the end of the Futsal impasse tunnel as both sides seem to be saying the same thing. Organizer Aubrey 'Shanghai' Major says he has been informed that the new contract for the use of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall is ready and waiting to be signed, while Director of Sport Neil Kumar says he is awaiting a meeting with the organizers to get the document signed. Major says an attempt was made to sign the contract but Kumar was not in office at the time.

The signing, whenever it comes, will signal the resumption of the five-a-side competition that has generated a level of excitement with sizeable crowds flocking the venue.

But the tournament has also seen its share of controversy with a spectator being stabbed and several rules of the facility being broken. The return of organized sport to the venue in the form of a basketball competition which is currently being played is a welcome sign that the C.A.S.H is once more open to usage, and therefore raises the possibility that the resumption of the futsal tournament is imminent, once the security criterion is met.

But Stabroek Sport understands that the only dates available for the rental of the facility are not until the month of August, and some time today the organizers will once again attempt to bring the current impasse to an end by approaching the Director of Sport with a view to signing the new contract.
