The New Straits TimesFutsal courts for all 40 Felda schemesFelda will build futsal courts in all its 40 land schemes countrywide to stimulate interest among settlers’ children in the increasingly popular game, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today.
The Deputy Prime Minister said 14 futsal courts, costing RM33 million, have been built and are being used in major Felda schemes like in Jengka, Pahang.
“Not only Felda settlers’ children are using the courts but also teenagers from outside land schemes,” he told reporters after launching the 2007 national Felda-FAM futsal tournament.
On the inaugural tournament, Najib, who is in charge of Felda, hoped it could help unearth new talents in futsal from Felda schemes who could represent the nation one day.
“This sport has been acknowledged to have proven its worth in producing many world-class professional footballers,” he said.
He hoped the Felda-FAM futsal tournament would be held every year.
Twenty-three men and 22 women teams from 14 states, except Sarawak, are participating in the three-day tournament, which kicked off yesterday, for the Felda challenge trophy and RM220,000 in total cash prize.
Two teams from Felda, one each from the armed forces, police, RTM, TV3, Utusan Malaysia, Maybank, Proton and Malaysian Civil Servants Sports and Welfare Council (Maksak) are also taking part.
