QUEENSLAND YOUTH GIRLS TOUR TO USA 2003 In response to a number of enquiries, we are proposing to send a state women’s under eighteen girls team to the USA next May. The team will not only play Futsal in Washington and Boston, but will also train with and play against USA national soccer league youth teams. The USA is considered by far to have the strongest women’s soccer league in the world and is a professional league . The touring team will be selected at the national club titles in January.
BRAZIL AT TOURNAMENT IN THE USA The Brazilian men’s Futsal team has just completed a three nation tournament in Milwalkee USA, with Mexico and the home country . Our ex state director of coaching, Mauricio Marques , was head of delegation, and reports it was a successful competition. For more information go to http://213.145.6.68/agenda/agenda-01.asp?id=736
NEWS ON MARTY CALVERT IN HOLLAND Marty Calvert is sending us regular reports from Holland on how he is going. He has put one report direct to our website www.qldfutsal.com.au . Soccer Australia has also put up an article on Marty on their website. Go to http://www.socceraustralia.com.au/news/feature.sps?id=110817&type=2&from=home&string=2
Hopefully Marty will be successful in his efforts and lead the way for other young players overseas.
By the way, the website of the club he is at is http://www.bunga.nl/
OLYMPIC HOPES IN TROUBLE The International Olympic Committee programme committee announced a number of recommendations that would be put to the full IOC congress in November. The bad news for us is that they are recommending Futsal not be brought in for 2008, mainly on the basis of first ,no need for a ‘similar’ sport to be entered and second , the cost of extra facilities. Much as we can argue against both, the fact is they are the recommendations. We are not as bad off as other sports however. Walking, softball, baseball and the pentathlon are recommended for the ‘chop’. Golf and seven a side rugby are recommended to be included. This is not the end of the world for our inclusion…FIFA holds a lot of pull with the IOC….but it certainly doesn’t help. Hopefully FIFA will put the right pressure on before November.
AMERICA MG HEADING FOR BRAZIL FUTSAL NATIONAL LEAGUE In May when we went to Brazil for Centre of Excellence, we trained at the America Clube in the suburb of Pampuhla. Those who went may be interested to know that America club have now decided to apply for the Futsal national league and compete with Minas Tenis Clube to be the champion team of Minas Gerais. In other news Miltontinio, the coach of Minas Tenis we met has left the club and moved to a club in another city.

AUSTRALIAN SPORTS COMMISSION ENQUIRY INTO SOCCER AUSTRALIA As you may have read by now, the Australian Sports Commission is going to hold an enquiry into the running and administration of soccer in the country. The enquiry will also look at women’s and Futsal as well. There is no value in me arguing the fors and againsts of the enquiry , but hopefully when it is finished we can finally get on with the job…getting people playing Futsal. Queensland Futsal is getting used to reviews and enquiries. In 2000, we were reviewed as part of an ASC funded review into the running of Futsal in Australia. In 2001 we were audited by the Queensland Office of Sport and now in 2002 the ASC is holding another review, taking us in again. Soon we’ll have to set aside a room for visiting auditors.
INSURANCES FOR THE YEAR Player insurances have been set for the year and although there has been a small increase we have not increased our registration fees to the clubs, but will instead absorb increases. Most clubs have however set registration fees for the year at $65 a senior and $60 a junior with discounts for families. Details on insurances will be given out at signons.
STATE NEWS
VALE CRAIG BARNES Death is always sad but a young death is sadder. I unfortunately have to report the passing of Craig Barnes at the age of 22 from cancer. I didn’t personally know Craig that well, but I was certainly lucky enough to witness his skills. Craig is an ex student of Shailer Park High School and thus grew up under the Futsal tutelage of well known state coach, Garry Kay. Craig played for both the school and Logan Futsal club, but it was in soccer he went on to better things, playing both premier league for Taringa and national youth league with the QAS. Queensland Futsal’s condolences go out to his family. I believe Shailer Park High will be naming an annual sports trophy in his honour.
EARLY SIGNONS SHOWING UPTURN IN NUMBERS It is early days but early enquiries and sign ons show we are in for a very big season across the state. Friendly games are already under way in most clubs with fixtures starting first week back after school holidays. New clubs such as Maryborough, Redlands and Marsden are showing great results while all the others are showing increased numbers across the board.
SIGN ON DATES COMING UP Hervey Bay is having sign on this Wednesday night 4th September at the PCYC. Maryborough is having another one next Saturday afternoon 7th September. More signons next week as clubs get them into me.

WHO ARE QUEENSLAND FUTSAL CLUBS ? I have had some enquiries in regards to certain indoor soccer competitions
being affiliated to the QFA or not. Could all readers please note that competitions run at Chandler Stadium in Brisbane, Boondall stadium in Brisbane, Brendale Stadium in Pine Rivers and Ipswich Girls Grammar School are not affiliated to us. Thus they are not covered by any of our insurances or can participate in any Queensland Futsal/Soccer Australia programmes. If you wish to play at a Futsal club in any of these areas or are unsure about the club you are presently playing at, please email us or ring the office in 32199444.
QUEENSLAND FUTSAL VISIT STANTHORPE THIS WEEK Two development officers from Queensland Futsal will be in Stanthorpe this Thursday and Friday , 5th and 6th September, running coaching clinics at local schools, mainly St. Joseph’s College and Stanthorpe High School. Hopefully, enough interest will be created to start a QFA affiliated club in the area.
FRIENDLY GAMES Even though fixtures don’t begin till 7th October, make sure you get some friendly games in early at your club. Most clubs started friendlies this week and we are also have trial games for girls teams from all centres at Mount Gravatt over the next few Sundays. Speak to your centre manager about friendlies.

JOKE FOR THE WEEK
I had to put this one in, as I found it funny.
Three Irishmen, Roy, Brendan and Damian , were stumbling home late one night after a game, and found themselves on the road which led past the old graveyard. "Come have a look over here", says Roy, "It's Michael O'Grady's grave, God bless his soul, he lived to the ripe old age of 87." "That's nothing", says Brendan, "here's one named Patrick O'Toole. It says here that he was 95 when he died." Just then, Damian yells out, "Here's a fella that died when he was 145 years old!" "What was his name?" asks Roy. Shamus lights a match to see what else is written on the stone marker, and exclaims, "Miles… from Dublin."
THAT’S ALL FOLKS…..SEE YOU NEXT WEEK
