Sunshine Coast DailyKawana Waters surprises with win25 August 2007Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn starred in a film all about defying the odds in the 2004 comedy classic Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
During the week, the Kawana Waters State High School open futsal side achieved a feat that followed a similar script by winning the Queensland-Northern NSW Champion of Champions tournament at ĬBeenleigh.
The school fielded the bare minimum five players and needed to get through seven games to lift the trophy.
As a result they were given little chance. A bookmaker would have struggled to field a bet on the quintet if a market was opened.
But win they did, beating Clontarff State High School in the final 7-6 with an extra-time golden goal from Matt Cornthwaite.
¡§We only had five players because of injury and illness and all of us were thinking let¡¦s just be competitive and try and get through the group stages,¡¨ coach Dustin Slypen said.
¡§Most of the other teams had five or six reserves. That¡¦s probably the reason we did so well; because they took us lightly.
¡§After seven half-hour games the boys were pretty bruised and battered. Some of the hits that were put on out there were good to watch.¡¨
Cornthwaite was joined by Brisbane Premier League player Josh Lynch, Wade Zammit, Keegan De Courcey and Buderim first division player Ben Robson.
Robson scored a monumental 23 goals. The side will now compete in the Australian titles against the winners of other national divisions.
