GDF, Conquerors in Futsal final

The Guyana Defence Force and Fruta Conquerors scored hard-fought victories Thurs-day night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to book their places in tonight's final of the English/Kashif and Shanghai Futsal football competition.

In the first semi-final GDF scored what could be called an upset win over the highly rated Alpha United winning by three goals to one while Fruta Conquerors conquered Santos 2-1.

Although Alpha United's Sherwin Vincent scored his 12th goal of the competition equalling John Waldron's of Silver Shattas total, the GDF on the backs of goals from Jerome Richardson in the third, Vellon David in the 14th and Shawn Anthony in the 18th minutes saw the GDF unit through.

In the second semi-final, goals from Gerald Grittens in the 14th minute and Sheldon Shepherd in the 74th helped Conquerors negate a goal in the second minute from Delon Thomas.

Meanwhile the National Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday in a release stated that it wished to express its appreciation to the organizers of the tournament.

"The organizers have ensured that the rules and conditions under the new contract have been adhered to in a satisfactory manner," the release stated.

"Strict security measures have been put in place and, as a consequence, patrons (male and female) were found and relieved of various types of dangerous implements including scissors, lighters, knives, ice-picks etc.", the release added.

"Swift action by the supervisor, organisers and the police caused the perpetrators to be arrested and taken away on Thursday when they were observed in a suspicious activity."

The release also informed that a police rank was assaulted while in the execution of his duties, adding that the NSC had condemned the act.
