Futsal team get three overseas stints

PETALING JAYA: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) have lined up three overseas assignments for the futsal squad ahead of the SEA Games in Thailand in December.

Team manager Hamidin Mohd Amin said the squad under the charge of P. Balakrishnan would go to Indonesia, Macau and Sydney.

A total of 21 players are in centralised training at the Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya and the final squad of 14 players will be named after their final test matches in Sydney from Nov 10-20.

The team will first go on a tour of Indonesia from Oct 1-10 before they compete in the Asian Indoor Championship in Macau from Oct 24-Nov 4.

“It is a hectic schedule but the players need the exposure to prepare for the SEA Games,” said Hamidin.

Malaysia have a tough draw in the Asian championship. They will be up against Asean champions Thailand, Afghanistan and Macau.

Said Balakrishnan: “We have a mixture of senior and young players. The test matches in Indonesia and Sydney will be handy in making the final selection for the SEA Games.”

Among the seniors in the team are striker Addie Azwan Zainal, Jamhuri Zainuddin and K. Thayalan.

Futsal will be making its debut in the SEA Games and Thailand are the favourites to win the gold medal.
