Philippine football and futsal star dies in road mishap

MANILA: Former Philippine football and futsal national team captain Dave Salo Fegidero died in a road mishap in Thailand at the age of 29 on Tuesday.

Fegidero passed away after sustaining serious injuries in a motorcycle accident in the southern Thailand city of Hat Yai.

Along with brothers Norman, Joshua, and cousin Troy, the four Fegideros saw action in the 2000 Tiger Cup. He also represented the country in the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the 2004 Olympic qualifiers.

Moving his talents to futsal, he was an outstanding player for the national side scoring two goals in the ASEAN Futsal Championships in Thailand last March. After playing in the AFC Futsal Championship in Vietnam 2005 where he captained the team, he also played in the AFC Futsal Championship qualifiers in Chinese Taipei and was instrumental in the team's progress to the final tournament in Japan last May. He earned his final cap in Osaka, heavilly contributing to the 2-2 draw with Central Asian powerhouse Tajikistan. Dave was recently recalled to lead the team for the SEA Games this December.
