Minister’s brother held after futsal brawl

KOTA KINABALU: The younger brother of a state minister was arrested in connection with a brawl over a futsal (indoor football) game that left one man unconscious in Sabah’s southwestern Beaufort district.

Beaufort police chief Deputy Supt Mustaffa Maarof Mustaffa said Wednesday that they have remanded a suspect in connection with the attack but declined to say if the man was related to a prominent state leader.

He said that the 28-year-old victim has been transferred from the Beaufort hospital to the intensive care unit of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here where his remains in critical condition.

He said that police have classified the case as voluntarily causing hurt.

Mustaffa said that the Sunday evening incident was apparently triggered by a dispute between two opposing teams over whether the ball was “out” or not.

“During the heated argument, a group of spectators came in to calm the situation but it ended in a fight,” he said, adding that the suspect, in his mid-30s, was not part of either team.

A second victim suffered minor injuries in the fight, he added
