BRAZIL BEAT SPAIN AT LAST

(Report complements of Steve Harris from Futsal-English website).

Indio and Leitao scored two for Brazil against Spain in the final match of the Atlantic Tournament, giving the Canarinhos the cup and sweet revenge over the world champs. Brazilian-born Daniel Ibanez scored the consolation goal for Spain.
As had been reported earlier, Spain did not go into tournament with its best team or with its players well prepared, but it would appear that the win by Brazil signifies a change in the Canarinho guard. The
starting five for Brazil were all members of the new generation, with Indio being the only member of the Guatemala 2000 team.

Brasil: Lavoisier, Euler, Neto, Indio, Pablo (starters), Andre, Manoel Tobías, Clemilton, Fininho, Leitao
Manager: Fernando Ferreti

Spain: Guillermo, Jordi Sanchez, Enrique "Kike" Boned, Javier Sanchez, Daniel (Starters), Purao, Alvaro, Javier Rodriguez, Riquer
Manager: Javier Lozano

Goals: 1-0 (Indio, 9'), 2-0 (Leitao, 29'), 2-1
(Daniel, 34')

WHAT DO YOU GET FOR YOUR PLAYER REGISTRATION ?
This year’s player registration is $60 an under 18 player and $65 a senior player. Of this registration the club gets $30 and the state body gets $30 and $35 respectively . There are also discounts for more than one in the family.
Of the amount received by the state body, $5.50 goes to Soccer Australia, $ 12 for player and public liability insurance, $2.50 for the identity card ( including the discount vouchers on the back), $1.50 to GST leaving $13.50 to help administer the state body ( based on a senior player).
The discounts on the back of the identity card were very popular last year , so we have continued them, but they do cost the association money. I think Wendy’s Icecream Parlour next to the Formulae One motel at Homebush does not want to see us again…three hundred kids with open two for one vouchers for a week really hit them hard .

SPECIAL OFFER FOR KIDS REGISTERING AT VIKINGS CLUBS
If you play and register at one of the following clubs…Townsville, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Deception Bay/ Redcliffe , Toowong, Ferny Grove, Jindalee, Ipswich, Acacia Ridge, Carina, Wynnum , Mt Gravatt, Logan City, Park Ridge, Marsden, Gold Coast and Toowoomba … you are also eligible for the following.
If your team is fully registered by 30th September including all players registered and bond paid, your team will receive a Buffalo/Vikings Futsal ball.
Every Strikers home game , four players under 15 across the state will be selected to watch the game from a private box, meet some of the players and have their photo taken with them. To be eligible you must fill in the application form and be fully registered. First game is against Northern Spirit on 21st September and the winners will be announced the week before.

STAFF CHANGES AT QUEENSLAND FUTSAL
A few changes have occurred at Queensland Futsal over the last few months. Richard Littler, who started at 18 as a centre administrator with us , has gone to manage a respite centre, but will still remain as men’s coach.
Paul Wadsworth has moved from Townsville to become a regional development manager, and has been replaced by Scott Cowan as North Queensland development officer.
Jim Hewson has joined us also as a regional development manager and with Paul will be taking responsibility for half the state each.
Cassie Ironside has started as administrator of Hervey Bay/Maryborough clubs and Gina Vuk will be managing the Acacia Ridge centre. We also presently have an internee from Southern Cross University , Andrew Crutcher, working in the office.
The present full structure of the association I will put in the newsletter next week.

A PIECE OF BRAZIL CALLED STANTHORPE
At this time of the year we are doing school coaching clinics all over Queensland to promote the sport. Last Thursday and Friday we were unfortunately that short of coaches ( we had eight out on the road) I headed out to Stanthorpe to put all the kids at St. Joseph’s through a clinic.
Outside of being impressed with the general FUTSAL skill level of the kids…and I must particularly complement the 4th/5th grade…. The passion for Futsal is unbelievable. It amazed me that every class I took remembered that Renauldo scored the winning goal in the Soccer World Cup with a Futsal ‘toepoke’ ( or as the astute English commentator Trevor Brooking called it ‘ a miskick’ ). Jim Armstrong, David Fleming and Argentinian teacher Luis Rauth are doing a great job, including changing the two court tennis centre into a Futsal centre . (as soon as those basketball rings go it will be perfect).
However the greatest thrill I got was to watch the kids at lunchtime on the courts….two games twenty against twenty, girls and boys mixed up , playing Futsal rules. It reminded me of lunch break at Sant Antonio in Belo Horizonte in Brazil.
If we had 100 St Joseph’s this sport would go through the roof.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH FUTSAL
Well not totally nothing to do with Futsal, but I have to tell somebody . On Saturday night Souths United beat Eastern Suburbs 2-1 in the men’s divisional playoff to go into the Queensland Premier Soccer League. Down 1-0 at halftime and playing away at Easts, the estimated 500 Souths supporters were brought to life with two goals in the second half, one a penalty won by Damian Conquest and the other a header from Scott Davidson . Proudly I can say that twelve years ago both players played in the under twelve state Futsal team, and the champion under twelve Souths United team ( both coached by myself), with Damian still a member of the Queensland and Australian Men’s Futsal team.
Founded in 1963, Souths have never in their history before been in the premier league, but for the season 2003 are one of only FOUR clubs in Queensland with representation in both the men’s and women’s premier league. I know I’m biased but the club’s close ties and embracing of Futsal I’m sure has a part to play in this. As a proud ex junior player, ex senior player, ex administrator, current women’s coach, parent of a player in the premier team and life member with 27 years service at the club, I have to give special mention to club president and Queensland Soccer treasurer Paul Young who in his tenure has led this resurgence. People have often joked to me about Souths being the ‘ Futsal ‘ club, now I hope they see the benefits and look to their own clubs.
Anyway, these are just the ramblings of a very proud life member.

HUMOUR
Current Queensland men’s player Damian Pilat picked me up last week with my answer on the Aussie players at Leeds United. He also gave me the answers to this weeks questions. To quote:
"Allistair,
First of all I think you have made a few mistakes in last weeks answers.
Shane Cansdell-Sheriff is an Australian player at Leeds United who has been
given a first team number. Therefore he is in the first team squad. Also the
name of the player is "Jacob Burns" not Paul Burns.

This weeks answers:
1) Gilberto ( ATHLETICO MINEIRO PLAYER AT ARSENAL )
2) The term FUTSAL is the international term used for the game. It is
derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "soccer", FUTbol or FUTebol,
and the French or Spanish word for "indoor", SALon or SALa.
3) Lee Harmon- Cook Islands ( OCEANIA FIFA FUTSAL DELEGATE)"

Thanks Damian, your university education is having some benefit. My apologies to the two Leeds players.

THIS WEEK’S QUIZ QUESTIONS
Of the two big Merseyside soccer teams, Liverpool and Everton, who has won the most first division/ premier league titles ?

(THANKS TO PAUL MCKARZEL FOR THAT ONE ).

The rules of Futsal were written in Uraguay in 1931 by Jules Ceriani. What major event is credited with being a catalyst in this occurring ?

The badge on the Brazilian national Futsal jersey has more stars above it than the badge on Brazil Soccer’s jersey…..why ?

How many Futsal World Cups has FIFA run, what years and where ?

( THANKS TO STEVE HARRIS FOR THESE THREE )

JOKE FOR THE WEEK

The Phone Company Interview

A phone company put an ad in the paper in order to recruit
workers. The next day, two groups of workers show up - a crew of
five men and our intrepid irish crew from last week…Roy, Damian and Jason.
The company can not decide who to give the job to, so they give
the two groups a test. The company boss says, "Each crew will
receive a telephone pole that must be installed into the ground.
Whoever is able to hammer it in first will get the job."
Both groups agree that this is a fair test, so off they go in the
Company trucks with the long telephone poles sticking out the
back. A few hours pass, and finally, at 5:00, the first crew
returns. "Yes!" they shout. "We came back first, so we get the
job!!"
"Good work, men," says the boss, "However, we must wait until the
irish crew comes back to make sure that the reason they're
delayed is not because of traffic or the truck breaking down."
"Fine, no problem," say the men. An hour passes, two hours pass,
three hours. Finally, at 8:30, the irishmen arrive. All the
group is flushed and breathing hard, as if they had just gone
through hard labor.
"What happened to you? What took so long?" asks the boss
incredulously.
"What do you mean, 'what took so long'?? Do we get the job?" says Roy in the style he is well known for.
"YOU get the job? No way! The other group were back here HOURS ago!"
"Well, of course they were," says Damian. "They only put half the
pole in the ground !!"

THAT’S ALL FOLKS…..SEE YOU NEXT WEEK
