Tamworth Northern Daily Leader There’s something new afoot indoorsMATT Arrua is endeavouring to bring a taste of Brazil to football in Tamworth. Arrua is hoping to get a Brazilian Futsal competition up and running.
It will be played of a Friday night at the Indoor Centre.
“It’s outdoor soccer on an indoor court,” Arrua said.
He said the Brazilian-based version varied from the regular futsal already played in Tamworth in that it is faster and a little bit longer, among other aspects.
“There are a couple of rules that are different and most important is the ball,” he said.
“The ball is smaller and it doesn’t bounce,” he said.
“You can’t just kick it. You really have to control it.”
“You also can’t kick from half-way – you have to be inside the circle and the keeper can come out and challenge the player.”
That lends itself well to really developing the players’ skill levels, as Arrua said can be seen in the Brazilian football players the world often marvels at.
Arrua is originally from the Central Coast and, after attending university in Armidale, has recently moved down to Tamworth, where he is working as a primary school teacher.
He has played and coached with the uni teams in Armidale and has also coached at The Armidale School.
The Friday night competition is a starting point for improving the local players’ skills, as he sees it.
There was an information night held last Friday night and, from that, Arrua said there are a few teams already signed on.
Games will consist of 20-minute halves, with teams of five on the court at a time, and commence at 6.30pm.
The competition will be open to players high school age and up at a cost of $12 for registration and $42 per week per team.
Anyone interested is encouraged to come along to the Indoor Centre tomorrow night or contact Arrua on 0431 045825.
