Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Darussalam National Football Association (BAFA) held a high tea reception yesterday to honour the Brunei futsal team for getting the gold medal and the bronze medallist Brunei football team at the just concluded 2nd Borneo Games in Kuching.

Pehin Haji Hussein, the President of BAFA in his welcoming address said: "We are proud of the achievements that have been made by both teams in the Borneo Games. The achievements are an honour for Brunei and the government of His Majesty. This is the result of united effort by players and officials through high commitment and support of the Youth and Sports Department and BAFA."

On next year events, Pehin Hussein said that BAFA will be joining the Asian Football Confederation -AFC Challenge Cup, Asean Football Federation-AFF championship and the qualifying round of Futsal World Cup at the AFC level.

"The participation of the international events will need players who are capable. BAFA will continue to identify players who can represent the country and make preparation for intensive training to get ready for the tournaments which are considered more challenging than the Borneo Games," he highlighted

The President of BAFA also expressed his approval that BAFA with Brunei Premier League is currently organising the National Football League which is DST Group Brunei Premier League as well as with Anati Event Management to organise the Brunei Futsal Terbuka Tournament."

When met at the function yesterday, Haji Mohd Yunos bin Haji Yusof, the coach of Brunei futsal team said: "I am very happy the Brunei futsal team obtained the gold medal in the Borneo Games. This is the first time that Brunei won gold in futsal. We achieved our target and my boys did exceptionally well."

With an undefeated record in the tournament, Brunei futsal team hit 13 goals past Sabah to win 13-3 in their first game. This was followed by another impressive win against Labuan 7-2 and then in the last game beating Sarawak 2-0.

"The exceptional performance by the futsal team came from sheer determination, commitment and discipline of the team as we have dropped two players previously for either failing or turning up late for training," he added.

Meanwhile Hj Mohd Noor Hj Hamid, the manager of Brunei football team said he was both happy and a bit disappointed with the bronze medal.

"I am happy that our team did quite well in the Borneo Games. We beat Sabah 5-0 but lost to Sarawak 4-1 after one of our players was sent off," he said.

"In the double knockout game, we beat Sabah again 3-1 but our team was exhausted from playing three matches within 48 hours and we lost to Kalimantan Timur 2-1."
