Aaron ScoonesOften credited with creating Brazil’s football legacy, futsal is a five-a-side version of the beautiful game which uses smaller and heavier balls than normal. It encourages better dribbling and passing skills.
Local football coach Matt Robert has set up a training programme for the game that had its regular tournament at the weekend.
‘They have to strike the ball better and they have to pass it instead of tapping it,’ said Robert.
‘It’s taken off. They enjoy the tournaments, that’s why I’ve decided to do more of them.’
Robert runs weekly futsal leagues at the Rue Maingy Scout Hall.
The tournaments take place every six weeks for different age groups.
Saturday’s competition for eight- and nine-year-olds, saw four teams battle it out.
The winners’ medals were handed to Futsal Devils after they beat The Army of Penguins 1-0 in the final.
The Devils’ goal came courtesy of their striker Stuart Sarre, who afterwards explained what make futsal different.
‘You’ve got rush goalies and there’s no sliding tackles and no heading,’ said the eight-year-old Hautes Capelles schoolboy.
‘The ball is smaller and harder. You pass it more.
‘I’m not too greedy any more.
‘I just love football and scoring goals.
‘The tournament has been really excellent.’
Sarre’s team mates in Futsal Devils were Ethan Gilman, Martin Savident, Callum Moores, Jordan Kelly, Connor Elmy and Thomas Dodd, who captained the side.
‘It was a good tournament. It was quite tough,’ said nine-year-old Dodd.
