Newman leads NMI strikers to third place in Guam futsal

A group of NMI female strikes was on Guam over the weekend to play in a futsal tournament and placed third out of 10 teams.

The team was composed of Emily Gries, Zoe Jewell, Katie Peters, Brenda Schultz, Madison Schultz, Becca Newman, and Alleny Tenorio. They played in a 5-player a side indoor football.

The NMI strikers debuted strong with a 1-0 win over the Crushers despite playing in their first-ever futsal.

“We had never played futsal before. Watching the games we saw various techniques such as “the flick”,” said Schultz in an email to the Variety.

“We were not anticipating doing this well as we had never played futsal before and the other teams had at least a season under their belts,” The NMI bets dropped their second match, losing to the Tigers, 1-2.

With the loss, there was a 3-way tie for second place with the NMI tying the Crushers and Quality in Pool A. Only two teams in each Pool are given slots to the next round and the NMI female strikers broke the tie and earned the last semis ticket after blanking Guahan, 5-0.

The NMI bets lost in the semis against the other team in Pool B, but managed to finish in the top three, winning against the losing semifinalist in Pool B in the consolation match.

The battle for third place was decided via a shootout with NMI goalie Becca Newman holding her ground against Guam strikers.

“We were very excited, but nervous as we took our places on the court for a chance to win third place. It was tied 1-1 at the end of the game which prompted a shootout,” Schultz said.

The game was tied last at 4-4 with Newman kicking last for the NMI.

Gries, Jewell, Schultz and Peters made the first four goals and Newman made it fifth in a row for the NMI.

Newman secured the third place finish for the visitors when he saved the ball kicked by the opposing team’s last hitter.

Newman was later named best goalkeeper of the tournament

Aside from the 5-player a side tournament, the NMI female strikers were also scheduled to compete in a 7-on-7 event yesterday.
