By Jude Lizama

Variety News Staff

THE SECOND part of the Department of Parks & Recreation/Department of Youth Affairs Youth Futsal Tournament came to an close Saturday afternoon at the Astumbo Community Gymnasium in Dededo.

Two days of fun filled action featured some of the best young talents in the discipline of soccer. In an exciting finals match, the Crushers collided with Hyundai to see who would end up with top tournament honors.

Competition opened up with both teams expending large amounts of energy focusing on ball possession and tough defense. Roughly eight minutes into the first half, Hyundai was able to capitalize first on offense as they scored the opening goal of the match that gave them a slim advantage.

Immediately after, the Crushers were able to revert back to their tough defense. Although unable to score, the Crushers kept their deficit manageable going into the brief halftime break, 1-0.

Entering the second half, the two teams kept a strong defensive mentality as the score remained 1-0 with just over 11 minutes left to play. If the Crushers could manage to score a goal, they would have had a fighting chance to win the game. Consequently for them, Hyundai mounted a huge offensive that put their title hopes out of reach.

Hyundai managed to score three more goals in as many minutes to stretch their advantage over the Crushers, 4-0. The Crushers Heather Thompson scored her team’s first goal after the ball ricocheted off the goalkeeper’s hands. However, Hyundai scored their final goal in the closing minutes as they went on to claim the U-14 title over the Crushers, 5-1.

Cobras strike back to win U-14 third place match

EXCITING third place game action in the DPR/DYA Youth Futsal Tournament took place Sunday afternoon prior to the championship game at the Astumbo Community Gymnasium in Dededo. In what seemed to be a lopsided match up unfolded into an unexpectedly exhilarating comeback win for the Cobras as they defeated the Wings, 6-3.

The Wings opened up the match in dominating fashion with a quick goal in the first 20 seconds of competition. In response, the Cobras shifted two players to help their goalkeeper on the defensive end in hopes of holding back the Wings offensive. The move worked in favor of the Cobra defense but hindered their ability to score.

The Wings players were able to chip pass the ball to get in good scoring positions as they managed two more scores in the first half. A couple of minutes before the half ended, the Cobras scored their first goal to claw within two scores of their opponents, 3-1.

Less than two minutes into the second half, the hungry Cobras struck with their second goal to pull within one score of the Wings. The game switched back to a defensive chess match for the next seven minutes but the Cobras showed signs of a late comeback.

On defense, the Wings began to slip up as they allowed the Cobras to receive the ball in more favorable parts of the court. Although both squads had near scores throughout the remaining moments of the game, the Wings held on to a one score lead, 3-2.

The Cobras scored the tying goal in the ninth minute of the second half, which was followed by three amazing goals in the final five minutes as they roared back from behind to win third place over the Wings, 6-3.
