Malaysia bank on Addie to bang in the goals

PETALING JAYA: The national team will be counting on seasoned campaigner Addie Azwan Zainal to deliver the goals in the KL World 5s futsal tournament, which will be held at the Stadium Negara from Jan 29-Feb 3.

The 28-year-old striker is the most experienced player in the team, who delivered a surprise silver medal in the Korat SEA Games last month. And Addie netted four goals to help Malaysia reach the final (Thailand beat Malaysia 5-0 to win the gold medal).

“It is a rare treat for us to play against some of the top teams in the world. The playing experience against them will do us good,” said Addie, who also featured in the previous inaugural KL 5s in 2003 and scored five goals to help Malaysia win the Plate Cup.

“We have the potential to be better in futsal but the lack of a professional league is a setback.”

Malaysia have been drawn in Group A with defending champions Argentina, England, Australia and Indonesia in the tournament offering a total purse of US$150,000. Group B comprises three-time world champions Brazil, Holland, China, Thailand and Iran.

Reigning world champions Spain are the notable absentees after having featured in the inaugural tournament at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Tickets have been priced at RM12 (preliminary round) and RM15 (semi-finals and final). Tickets can be purchased through telephone bookings (603-22746666) or the internet (www.ticket2u.biz or www.tickethotline.corp.my).
