Argentina Thrash Malaysia 7-1 In World 5's Futsal

January 30, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- Argentina thrashed Malaysia 7-1 in their second Group A match of the KL World 5'S futsal tournament at the Stadium Negara here today.

Argentina opened the scoring through Christian Borruto in the fourth minute. Malaysia equalised eight minutes later through captain Addie Azwan Zainal.

Then Argentina completed the goal rout, scoring through Mauro Taffarel (13th minute), Christian Borruto (14th), Alamiro Vaporaki (15th), Ignacio Caviglia (21st and 35th) and an own goal by Malaysia's M. Ruzaley Abdul Rahim (16th).

Malaysia's coach P. Balakrishnan said his boys fought hard and restricted the opponents to a single-digit score.

"We were up against a very good side. Nobody expected us to win and the Argentineans wanted to win badly because they are looking for a place in the last four and that made it difficult for us."

Asked on Malaysia's third group match against Australia tomorrow morning, he said Malaysia must beat Australia to get a place in the semi-final.

In another Group A match, Indonesia beat England 7-2 for their first win in three matches. Yesterday, Indonesia were beaten by Australia (1-5) and Malaysia (2-3).

In Group B, former world champions Brazil beat Asian champions Iran 4-0.

Brazil's goals were scored by Lenisio Teixeira Junior (15th and 23th), Willian Alves Morais (24th) and Mithyue Linhares (31st).

Malaysia given harsh lesson

MALAYSIA got a futsal lesson from world champions Argentina in the KL World 5s tournament at Stadium Negara yesterday.

Malaysia, 3-2 winners over Indonesia on Tuesday, were found wanting against the South American giants and were hit for seven in a match which only the foolhardy thought the hosts could win.

It started promisingly enough for the Malaysians but once the Argentines found their footing and got into rhythm, there was no stopping them. Christian Borruto opened the scoring in the fourth minute for his fifth goal of the tournament.

But Malaysia came back and equalised in the 12th minute through skipper Addy Azwan Zainal. Malaysia's joy, though, was short-lived as in the very next minute Mauro Taffarel made it 2-1 before Maximiliano Rescia added a third in the 14th.

Though Malaysia battled on, they never looked like scoring again. Alamiro Vaporaki (15th) and Taffarel (18th) made it 5-1 for Argentina going into the break. Ignacio Caviglia (21st and 35th) then completed Malaysia's misery.

"There was no shame in our defeat because we fought hard and restricted them to a single digit score," said coach P. Balakrishnan. "We were up against a very good side and hats off to the Argentines."

"We face Australia next and if we want to make the last four we have to beat them. Nothing else will do," the coach added.

In the other Group A match Indonesia made sure they would not finish bottom of the group by thumping England 7-2.

Asean champions Thailand picked up three points in their second match in Group B when they beat China 5-1.

The Thais, who were held 3-3 by the Dutch on Tuesday, came out with all guns blazing and scored all their goals in the first half, while China got their first goal of the tournament late in the second half.

In the other Group B match Brazil outplayed Iran 4-0.
