Javi Rodríguez is the most successful player in the history of the young sport. He has won 2 European champions and three World Cups with Spain, and has won the UEFA Futsal Cup twice and the League title with Playas Castellon. He moved to FC Barcelona two years ago when they won promotion to the Division of Honor and now captains the club he loves. He could be the Zinedine Zidane of Futsal, and he talked exclusively to BoroFutsal.co.uk about his world cup win and one day playing for Boro!

Damon Shaw: You are the most successful futsal player in the sport’s history, what has been the best moment in your career?

Javi Rodriguez: The world cup in Guatemala, in 2000, we were the champions for the first time.


DS: What ambitions do you still have remaining?

JR: There’s still a big one and that’s winning a title with Barcelona.


DS: After you retire, do you want to stay in the futsal world?

JR: Yeah, I would like it a lot, because I’ve spent all my life in futsal and it’s very nice to help other people.


DS: As a coach?

JR: Yeah, as a coach or manager


DS: Why did you choose futsal instead of 11-a-side football?

JR: I played football until I was 17, but as I didn’t have much of a future, I started to mix futsal and football, and then I preferred to continue with futsal.


DS: Why do you prefer it [futsal]?

JR: It’s more beautiful, it’s more dynamic, and I believe it’s more important for teaching. You learn a lot about technique, strength, and agility. I believe that futsal is much better than football.


DS: Who is the best coach that you have ever played under?

JR: The one I have now, Marc Carmona.


DS: Can you describe a typical day of a futsal player?

JR: I like to sleep a lot, in the morning go to training, eat at home with my wife and daughter, go to the park, go to train in the afternoon. On days without training or when we have a match, I rest at home and spend time with my wife and daughter.


DS: What do you know about English futsal?

JR: Not a lot, I didn’t know that England had a national team.


DS: The national league will be played this year for the first time.

JR: I didn’t know that, I knew about France, that they created a national squad, but I think that is nice that England, France and Germany, who are very powerful [in football], start joining futsal.


DS: When you are close to retiring, would you like to play for Middlesbrough?

JR: Yeah of course, it’s always nice, in addition to playing for your club, to experience many things. I was lucky to have the possibility of going to Japan, working with other people, and the truth is that it’s always nice, and important. I had offers from Russia to go and play there, and I’d like to experience a different league. I’d like to see the England league, to find what is going on there, and how futsal is working.

DS: Eres el jugador de fútbol sala con mas éxito, ¿cual fue el mejor momento de tu carrera?

JR: En la copa del mundo en Guatemala en el 2000, fuimos campeones por primera vez

DS: ¿Que ambiciones te quedan?

JR: Una muy grande que es obtener algún titula con Barçelona.


DS: Después que te retires, ¿quieres quedarte en el ámbito del fútbol sala?

JR: Si, si, me gustaría mucho, porque llevo toda la vida en el futsal y es muy bonito poder ayudar a otra gente.


DS: ¿Cómo entrenador?

JR: Si, como entrenador, o como director deportivo.


DS: ¿Porque has elegido el fútbol sala y no el fútbol?

JR: Yo he jugado fútbol hasta los 17 años, pero no tuve demasiada proyección y compaginaba el fútbol y el fútbol sala, y preferí quedarme en el fútbol sala.


DS: ¿Porque te gusta más?

JR: Es más bonito, más dinámico, creo que es más importante aprender. Aprendes mucho de técnica, de fuerza, de movilidad. Yo creo que el futsal es mucho más agradable que el fútbol.


DS: ¿Quién es el mejor entrenado que has tenido?

JR: El que tengo ahora, Marc Carmona


DS: ¿Me puedes describir un día típico de un jugador de fútbol sala?

JR: Me gusta dormir mucho, ir por la mañana al entrenamiento, comer en casa con mi mujer y mi hija, ir al parque, ir a entrenar por la tarde. Los días que no hay entrenamiento o que tuvimos partido, descansar en casa y salir a dar una vuelta con mi mujer y mi hija.


DS: ¿Que sabes sobre el futsal en Inglaterra?

JR: Muy poquito. No sabia que Inglaterra tenia selección.


DS: Ahora empieza la liga nacional

JR: No sabia, sabia si de Francia, que había incorporado una selección, pero yo creo que es bueno que Inglaterra, que Francia, que Alemania que son las grandes potencias, que se metan en el futsal.


DS: Cuándo estés cerca de retirarte, ¿Te gustaría jugar para el Middlesbrough?

JR: Si claro, siempre es bonito, aparte de jugar en tu club, poder experimentar muchas cosas, yo he tenido la suerte de poder ir a Japón, hacer clínicas con gente, y la verdad es agradable, siempre es importante. He tenido ofertas de Rusia para ir a jugar ahí, y me gustaría poder experimentar otra liga. Me gustaría ver la liga de Inglaterra, que pasa ahí, como se mueve, como funciona el futsal ahí.
