First national futsal championship kicks off

Vietnam’s football governing body blows the whistle today to start the first ever National Futsal Championships.

The 12 team contest will be in two legs from March 2-10 and October 4-17.

According to the Vietnam Football Federation, the first leg of competition will be held in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 6 Indoor Stadium and the return leg in the central city of Da Nang.

Among the 12 teams, three are from Hanoi, four from Ho Chi Minh City and the five remaining teams are from Ca Mau, Ha Tay, Tien Giang, Da Nang, and Tay Ninh provinces.

The championship is expected to boost the infant sport in the country as well as help prepare for the international championships, said Truong Hai Tung, the Vice-Chief of VFF’s Department for Human Resources, Women’s Football, Futsal and Amateur Football.

The two groups, which were drawn late Saturday, will play single round-robin format.

The two top teams in each group will advance to the semifinals whose date is yet to be confirmed.

Players for the national team to play in the Asian Football Confederation Futsal Championships (AFC) will also be selected through-out the tournament.

Former Thailand futsal coach Pattaya Piemkum was chosen as the national futsal team coach last week.

At the AFC Futsal Championship in Malaysia from March 26-30, Vietnam will face Malaysia, Maldives and Chinese Taiwan in Group A.

Futsal is an indoor version of association football.
