Hanoi players hit referee at futsal nationals

Another match at the first-ever National Futsal Championship in Hanoi has been marred by a brawl, with a couple of players from the host team assaulting the referee.

Cuong Quoc Hanoi took on Thai Son Nam from Ho Chi Minh City in a group match Thursday and quickly the southern team took a 2-0 lead.

The match became increasingly tense when, in the 24th minute of the second half, Hanoi player Thai Khac Tiep floored Quoc Tuan with an elbow.

When referee Pham Van Cuong showed Tiep the red card, goalkeeper Doan Minh Tuan lost his temper.

He rushed to Tuan who was still on the floor and kicked him in the neck.

The referee again brandished the red card and this time both Tiep and Tuan turned on him.

The goalkeeper punched him and Tiep kicked him in the back.

At the time, other players and security personnel intervened and separated the combatants.

It took 15 minutes to restore order and the game to resume, and Thai Son Nam finally won 6-0.

The authorities have not said what action they planned to take.

This was the second major tussle at the tournament after, rival players from Hanoi’s Thai Son Bac and Dilmah Ha Tay in the north got into a pitched battle on Sunday.

Three of the players were suspended for up to five matches.

The National Futsal Championships kicked off Sunday with 12 teams participating over two legs – the second leg is scheduled for October 4-17 in Da Nang.
