Thai Son Nam win futsal championship

VietNamNet Bridge – Thai Son Nam beat Nam Viet A Da Nang 4-2 after penalty shootouts early this week in HCM City's District 6 Indoor Stadium to take the first stage of the National Futsal (indoor football) Championship.

In the final oh Monday, Tran Duc scored first for Nam Viet A 72 minutes into the match. The team doubled the score only eight minutes later when the rival defence faltered in front of an aggressive offence.

Van Long received a ball in a perfect long-distance pass making a straight shot to the net past goalie Le Bao Khanh.

Then, in a surprise comeback toward the match end, Thai Son Nam's Bao Minh stepped up the competition and narrowed the score to 1-2.

Nam Viet A's players, still fumbling from the unanticipated goal, suffered a second blow only moments later when The Tam slipped through for an easy score.

The draw pushed the two sides into a penalty shootout. Thai Son Nam goalkeeper Bao Khanh rose to the occasion and blocked two of Nam Viet A's shots, helping his team solidify their top place in the tournament and a bonus of VND15mil (US$950).

Nam Viet A came in second with VND10mil. The third position and VND5mil bonus went to Ha Tay Dilmah Tea who beat Maseco 4-2 in the third-play-off match earlier.

The second stage of the tournament will be held in October in Da Nang.

After observing the match, French futsal expert Patrick Jacquemet said Vietnamese players showed skill though they sometimes relied on techniques used primarily in outdoor football.

"I think such players' performances are good having only had a few years to develop the sport. Some teams perform quite well like Ha Tay Dilmah Tea and Thai Son Nam," said Jacquemet.

"The first stage is always difficult so you need to have a plan and strong support so you can go far in the future."

Jacquemet is a teaching assistant for Scott Gilligam, former coach of the Australian national futsal team who is training Vietnamese coaches at HCM City's Thanh Long Sports Centre.
