Thai futsal coach aims high for AFC Championship

Thailand's futsal coach Claudio Vicente Luise has praised his charges on the Thai team and set his sights on wresting the title away from Iran at the AFC Futsal Championship in Jakarta next month. Speaking to the Bangkok Post on Monday, the Argentine described his team as skillful and fast improving, although they may not yet have reached the level of the accomplished Iranian side that has won all three previous editions of the AFC Futsal Championship. "I think the Thai players are as skilled as any players in Asia and they have improved very quickly," said Luise. "Right now Iran are the best futsal team in Asia. It will take more than the one month I have got here for Thailand to reach the same level as Iran. "Remember that Iran started playing futsal nearly 10 years ago while Thailand only began two years ago. "The Thai players are good at attacking but they need to improve their defensive skills. Also the squad of players is limited. The reserve players are still not good enough to step in and replace the main players." Despite his tough assessment of the team, Luise still wants his team to aim high at the AFC Futsal Championship. "For the Asian Championship, I don't want to aim at reaching only the quarter- or semi-finals, I want the team to aim at winning the tournament," he said. Thailand topped their group at last year's AFC Futsal Championship but bowed out of the tournament in the quarter-finals when they were beaten 4-3 by eventual finalists Uzbekistan. This year's tournament will be held at the Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta from October 22 to 30. * Views expressed in the news articles are not necessarily official views of the Asian Football Confederation.
