Libya Futsal 2008: Roundup of Day Three

24/03/2008

Roundup of day three matches of the 4th African Futsal Championships ongoing in Tripoli, Libya.

Group One

Tunisia 4:1 Cameroon
Tunisia revived their hopes of a next round courtesy a 4-1 victory over Cameroon in their Group One clash at the African Union Hall on Sunday.

A brace from Ben Ali Ibrahim inspired the Tunisians to their first win of the campaign at the expense of a Cameroonian side, who again failed to click.

Former national team player, Zoubeir Beya played an influential role as he raided the Cameroonian half on several occasions.

Ben Hamdia Riadh and Hamdi Imed scored the other goals for Tunisia, while Alioum Joel grabbed the consolation for the West Africans.

However, Cameroon coach Epee Louis Rene remains optimistic about a place in the last four despite the loss.

“The team showed an improvement in they play today. But they wasted a lot of chances upfront.

“We have two more games, and I’m sure we can do better,” he said in a post match interview.

Libya 4:1 Morocco
Hosts Libya maintained their unbeaten run by outclassing neighbours Morocco 4-1 at the African Union Hall on Sunday.

Two first half strikes by Mohamed Yahya Abdulwahed and one each in the second half from Shahout Mohamed and Abdel Rahim Rabie saw the host nation cruised to their third successive victory at the championships.

The Moroccans showed some good signs and managed to score a goal but that was all they could grab as the Libyans defence was resolute even in the absence of captain Abdallah Abdulgasem Nagi, who was stretched-off few minutes before the interval.

Libya’s Croat trainer Mato Stankovic expressed satisfaction with his players output which saw them became the first team to qualify to the semi-finals.

“My players really proved to all that we have a good team. We deserved the victory.

“Though we have qualified, we will approach our last game against Cameroon with all the seriousness it deserves.”

Group Two

Angola 2:2 Egypt
Defending champions Egypt were held to a two all draw by Angola in a heated Group Two clash at Cortuba.

The encounter dubbed “clash of the titans” live up to the billing as both sides played out one of the best games at the championships so far.

Despite scoring 17 goals so far, the defending champions had their attack eclipse by the Angolans, who proved their quest to go far.

Egypt however remains on top of the group’s standings.

South Africa 3:10 Mozambique
Mozambique deepen the woes of neighbours South Africa by handing them their third defeat at the championships courtesy a 10-3 drubbing in the Group Two clash at Cortuba.

The loss dashed the hopes of the South Africans who were hoping for a medal zone berth.

Mozambique held dominance for a greater part of the game, confirming that with the cricket scoreline.
