Libya Futsal 2008: Roundup of Day Five

25/03/2008

Roundup of day five matches of the 4th African Futsal Championships ongoing in Tripoli, Libya.

Group One

Morocco 8:1 Cameroon
Morocco clinched a ticket to the next round with an 8-1 drubbing of Cameroon in the final group one clash at the African Union Hall on Tuesday.

The Moroccans needed the points badly to qualify and did that in perfect style with dominance in possession from the onset at the expense of the Cameroonians, who again failed to glitter.

Mouad Cherkaoui, Hamza Laarissi and El Azar Mahjoub scored for the Moroccans to clinch their third win of the campaign and finish behind hosts Libya on second position.

For Cameroon, it was very evident from their play they are gradually picking the pieces, having exhibited some occasional brilliance.

An excited Hamza Laarissi congratulated his colleagues for the good mentality towards their last two games after losing to Libya on Sunday.

“Our mentality was good, and we played very well. It has been our dream to qualify for Brazil and we’re on course.

On his part, Cameroonian Ariel Thiery attributed their woeful performance to inadequate preparation for the ten-day championships.

“We had little time to prepare and it didn’t work well for us. However, it has been a great experience and the future can only be bright.”

Nigeria 5:3 Tunisia
Nigeria ended the 4th African Futsal Championship with something to cheer about after beating Tunisia in the ultimate group one clash at Cortuba.

Despite exhibiting some form, the West Africans were yet to pick a win and achieved that in grand style against the experienced Tunisian side.

Not even the presence of former Carthage Eagles star Zoubeir Beya could scare the Nigerians who outplayed their North African opponents to cruise to their only win at the championships.

The win saw Nigeria finish on third position in the group, from first point.

Even though they failed to qualify, head coach Abel Oladunni Oyekale says its a great experience for his team.

Group Two

Angola 6:5 Mozambique
A late strike by Felix Agostino aided Angola to beat neighbours Mozambique 6-5, but still the latter progressed to the last four.

Angola finished on seven points, same as their opponents, but Mozambique qualified to the semi-finals courtesy superior goal advantage.

The hotly contested encounter saw both teams treat fans to one of the best games at the championships with good attacking play.

The game was tied 2-2 at half time but Angola went up twice through Paulo Pereira and Pimenta Pedro before David Mondlane

Zambia 5:6 South Africa
South Africa beat Zambia 6-5 in their ultimate group two clash in Cortuba but was still not enough to see them through , having lost their last three games.

It was the only win for the South Africans, who were hoping to make an impact at the ten-day championships.

Zambia, who were highly favoured after winning their penultimate clash twenty four hours earlier crumbled once again, succumbing to their third loss at the championships.

Both teams are out of the championships, but the South Africans finished at the bottom of the group.
