SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Police were continuing their investigation Wednesday into a brawl that erupted at a futsal match between traditional Brazilian clubs Palmeiras and Corinthians, injuring two police officers and resulting in nine arrests.
The fighting occurred Tuesday as Palmeiras and Corinthians played to a 1-1 draw in the Sao Paulo state futsal
final in Sao Bernardo do Campo, on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.
Two officers sustained minor injuries and nine fans were detained for questioning before being released. The match was suspended and will be completed at a later date.
The arena was packed with supporters from both teams, and the confrontation spilled onto the court prompting players to scramble to the locker rooms.
Police officers drew their weapons and used pepper spray to contain the altercation, the press office of the Sao Paulo state public safety department said.
