Daily TimesFutsal tournament at LUMS todayLAHORE: Thirty-two teams from various institutions of the city will participate in the One-Day Nirala Futsal Challenge Trophy 2008 at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) today (Sunday).
Futsal, a fast-growing game around the world, is a five-a-side version of football, and is played on a court surface. According to a press release issued on Saturday, students from various schools and colleges including Government College University, the National College of Arts, Forman Christian College University, the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore School of Economics, University College Lahore, the Foundation for Advancement of Science and Technology, IQRA University, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore Grammar School, The City School, and Defence Public School are participating in the event.
The teams will be divided into two categories: Under-18’s and University Open.
The event is intended to promote football in schools, colleges and universities. A statement from the event’s sponsors said, “Nirala Sweets, in conjunction with its 60th anniversary celebrations, is committed to the acute and long term development of football in Pakistan in line with FIFA Pakistan’s goals for the Asian qualifying rounds for the World Cup in South Africa in 2008.” The organisers have arranged a carnival to accompany the tournament.
