Under-21 futsal tournament begins

Qualifying for the first UEFA European Under-21 Futsal Tournament gets underway today with 28 teams aiming to claim seven places alongside hosts Russia in December's finals in St Petersburg.

Contenders
Three of the seven groups kick off today, with only the first-placed finishers to qualify for the winter showpiece. Among the nations in action are Hungary, who will stage Group 5, hoping to begin a run of success leading to the next UEFA European Futsal Championship, which they also host. On Thursday, the dominant nation in senior futsal, Spain, begin Group 3 attempting to match their victory in last December's presitigous friendly tournament in St Petersburg. Italy, who beat that nation 2-1 in February, are at home in the last mini-tournament, Group 6, from Friday until Monday.
