The Tide On LineNFA plans leagues for beach soccer, five-a-sideSaturday, Apr 12, 2008The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has approved the proposal for the commencement of leagues for beach soccer and five-a-side football (Futsal) in the country.
Chief Obinna Ogba, the NFA board member who read the communique of the committee’s meeting at the association’s secretariat, said details of the leagues would come out later.
“The details of these two new leagues will be worked out by the NFA’s Leagues Management Committee led by NFA First Vice-Chairman Amanze Uchegbulam,’’ he said.
It will be the first time in Nigeria for beach soccer and five-a-side (futsal) football to get leagues of their own.
Nigeria, since the popularisation of both variations of football in the 90s by FIFA, has not established any competition for them.
The Nigerian five-a-side team crashed out in the first round of the African futsal championship in Libya last month.
The Nigerian team to the 2007 African beach soccer champions and quarter-finalists at the world championship held in Brazil also lost out in the 2008 African championship in South Africa last month.
