Western teams take to Futsal soccer

Sunday, April 20, 2008

THE star-studded ASPAP side is the favourite to win the Futsal tournament in Lautoka today.

With the likes of Lautoka reps Isikeli Seva, Netani Momoivalu, Labasa rep Samu Kautoga, Navua rep Valerio Nawatu and Ba reps Niumaia Tagi and Malakai Tiwa ASPAP dumped defending champion Medics 4-1 yesterday.

ASPAP team manager Krishna Chandra said the district reps had not faced any difficulty acclimatising to the abbreviated code.

He said the side was on track to qualify for the quarter-final.

"They are seasoned players so it didn't take much time for them to adjusted to the conditions," Krishna said. "By participating in the tournaments these players have been able to showcase their skills."

The Shop n Save Lautoka side, with the inclusion of district reps Seremaia Nadusitu, Aaron Underwood, Solomoni Niulevu and Isimeli Naresia, recorded two wins in pool play.

The side defeated Waiyavi Strikers 4-1 before escaping with a 2-1 win over a gritty FSC One team.

Lautoka Football Association president Shalendra Prasad thanked the Lautoka Business House Association for organising the tournament.

Prasad said there was a need to stage more tournaments so the sport could be further developed. "What we also need is a good playing surface," Prasad said.

The final of the tournament is scheduled to kick off at 4pm.
