Barre Montpelier Times ArgusFutsal is a winnerLast week, the Capital Soccer League completed its first season of futsal after 10 years of indoor (boarded) soccer at the Civic Center. Curious as to how the new sport was received by some of the younger players, I recruited my daughter and a friend to gather up some quotes from Red and Black U-14 players.
The verdict: futsal by a whisker. Players voted one for indoor, two for futsal, and two liked both equally. It was a tally eerily similar to the championship game between Red and Black U-14, which ended tied at 2-2. Red ultimately claimed the title by virtue of more goals scored during the regular season, an attractive feature of futsal. Herewith:
Andie Parento, 13, Capital Red.
"I like both indoor and futsal soccer. I can use the boards in indoor, but the game is much faster in futsal. Futsal helps me work on fast passes, but I like indoor because I can use longer passes and more space to move the ball.
Anna Abrams, 13, Capital Red "As a goalie, I like them the same. For futsal there's a lot more action. With indoor I play more on the field and we can pass back. We can also use the wall and there's no out-of-bounds at indoor. I also like futsal at the Civic Center where I can throw pass half, unlike the Essex soccer place."
Caleb Basa, 12, Capital Black "I like futsal better. You can score more and you don't get tired. Futsal improves your one touch, you get more touches on the ball, and you get more playing time."
Jack Basa, 12, Capital Black "I like futsal better. You can work on ball handling skills, quick decisions, and touch play. You can score anywhere on the field. The wall in indoor doesn't improve your skills; it's kind of like 'cheating' because in outdoor there are no walls."
Kate Drew, 13, Capital Red "I like indoor better because I am a person who dribbles far and kicks very high. I also don't do little sly tricks to get around people. I use speed and in futsal you can't really do that, so it's harder for me."
