Ultimate Champions League For Southeast Asia Futsal Teams

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's and Southeast Asia's futsal enthusiasts have the chance to prove their capability in the futsal arena at the inaugural Sports Planet: Ultimate Champions League 2008.

The competition which is co-organised by Sports Planet, the largest futsal venue provider in Malaysia and Southeast Asia and Revive isotonic drink, will be held in league format for eight months.

"It is open to futsal teams from all over Malaysia and the neighbouring countries. The competition started early this month. Currently, there are 120 teams registered to compete in the fortnightly qualifying competition," said Sports Planet executive director Wong Horr Wai at a press conference here Thursday.

Wong added that the championship is to foster and promote futsal in Malaysia and the region.

"Having a single day knock-out tournaments like the usual tournaments is good but they do not allow teams to display their consistency, stamina and team management skills. Our objective for having a longer period competition is to bring out the best among the best," said Wong.

The qualifying competition is played at 15 Sports Planet venues in three countries -- Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.

Winner of the Grand Finals will walk away with RM15,000 cash prize, while runners-up and second runners-up will have RM8,000 and RM3,000 respectively.
