From Comboyne to Brazil

by Ashley McGlynn

IT'S a long way from a dairy farm in Comboyne to Brazil, but that is the exact journey Joe Fisher will take next week.

The 18-year-old has been selected in an Australian U20 futsal team for a tour of Brazil.

"I'm stoked, it is my first trip overseas," Fisher said.

The tour is organised to coincide with the Futsal World Cup.

"We will be watching games in the finals and, at the same time, taking on local and provincial teams," Fisher told the Port News.

Fisher gained selection in the team after he impressed selectors in a local school competition in Port Macquarie.

He then travelled down to Melbourne and his performances there were enough to secure a spot in the national outfit.

"I know one guy in the side, we played together in Melbourne," Fisher admitted.

"It'll be a steep learning curve, we (the national team) haven't played together yet, but we will get a chance to do some training when we get over there."

The futsal that Fisher is exposed to in Brazil, the home of the parent game, is expected to be an experience in itself.

"I think it will be an insane standard," he acknowledged.

The team's tour is for three weeks and, if all goes to plan, Fisher hopes to look to pursue his futsal career further after the trip.

"I f I could I would love to, but we will see."
