Bangkok PostPanuwat hits the winnerby
Tor ChittinandThailand Futsal (five-a-side) edged a stubborn Iraq side 1-0 on the first day of the AFC Futsal Championship at Nimibutr Gymnasium yesterday.
The Group A victory came courtesy of a goal from Panuwat Janta.
Despite enjoying the majority of the possession and several chances, the hosts found the Iraq keeper Utaly Abdulqader hard to beat.
However, Panuwat made the breakthrough with an impressive strike in the 12th minute when his powerful left-footed shot flew into the roof of the net.
Iraq had a late free-kick fly over the bar but they could not find an equaliser as Thailand held on, much to the home fans' delight.
Thailand will take on Indonesia at 2.15pm today.
