Fury Wins Futsal Tourney in OT

Futsal Fury’s Zack Thorn knocked in the game-winning goal with five seconds left in overtime to lead his team to a 3-2 victory over the Breakers Megaboom on Sunday in the second annual San Diego Futsal Tournament B&GU-7/8 championship game at Alliant International University. The dramatic finish was similar to how Fury got into overtime in the first place. The Fury squad found itself down a goal late in regulation while its opposition counted down the seconds, but Robbie Stirling accepted a pass from Logan Thralls and drilled it in to beat the buzzer, tie the game and move into overtime.

The Breakers Aloni Seiler’s drive to the net created an own goal by the Fury, lifting the Breakers to a 1-0 lead in the second minute. Nine minutes later, Stirling sent the ball soaring to the back of the net to tie the game. He wasn’t finished, as he took another shot immediately after, but the Breakers weren’t having it. The squads headed into the short halftime squared at one.

After the intermission, the Fury was on immediate defense. Newly checked in keeper Marcus Pinzon was tested right away but proved his stealth and came up with a clutch save. Futsal’s Emily Hill then blocked another Breakers attempt. Seiler finally got around the defense when she knocked a score for a 2-1 lead in the 27th minute. Stephanie Alvarez continued the Breakers offense when she took a shot seconds later, but Pinzon produced the save to keep the score within one. With seconds left, it appeared the Breakers bagged the title, but Stirling had other ideas when his goal pushed the game into overtime.
