Five-a-side teams eye World Cup berth

Tuesday, June 03, 2008

THE Fiji side has set its sights on qualifying for the World Cup and the quest will start this weekend with the Oceania Football Federation FUTSAL 5-a-side play-offs at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

Up against New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia, the side will try to become the first Fiji soccer side to make a World Cup.

The Intiaz Khan-coached side marched into camp yesterday and will have the next few days to perfect their skills before the tourney kicks off.

"Most players played at the FACT and we expect all players to be in camp by this afternoon," Khan said.

"We have the next few days to perfect our combination and I can say we have a good side and they will be competitive."

The OFC Championship is held every four years with the winner progressing to the FIFA FUTSAL World Cup which will be held in Brazil this year in September.

This year marks the first championship since Australia switched confederations from OFC to Asia.
