Our Sports CentralU.S. Futsal Gears Up for CONCACAFHOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The U.S. opens the CONCACAF Futsal Championship with a 1 p.m. (CST) match against Haiti in Group B play on Tuesday, June 3, in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The U.S. is the defending CONCACAF gold medalist heading into the tournament, which runs through Sunday, June 8.
The U.S. played in two exhibition matches over the weekend at Bremen Domo in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Chicago Storm goalkeeper Jeff Richey and midfielders Andy Rosenband and Matthew Stewart all played a part in each victory.
On Friday, May 30, Stewart opened the second half with a goal in the 29th minute to give the U.S. a 4-0 lead against Winasor. Team USA won, 7-1, scoring the first seven goals of the match.
On Saturday, May 31, Richey saved seven shots as the U.S. trounced Ferretaria el Trebol, 13-0, in the Americans' second exhibition. Rosenband scored the team's sixth goal in the 14th minute. The U.S. pounded out 11 first-half goals.
The top three teams in the CONCACAF qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup, which runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 19 in Brazil.
This year's 12-man U.S. Futsal squad consists of 11 players who competed in the Major Indoor Soccer League this past season. Before traveling to Guatemala, the U.S. played in three exhibition matches during training camp in Brazil. The U.S. posted a 1-2 record, with Richey earning one victory in the net.
