The ForesterTHEY'RE FUTSAL CRAZY AT NEWENTNewent Juniors will be Gloucestershire's representatives in the national futsal finals in Sheffield from June 21-22.
Futsal is five-a-side football with a difference, played with a smaller ball that bounces less, and without boards or walls. It is sanctioned by FIFA and UEFA because of its emphasis on skill and in countries like Spain, Portugal, Italy and Brazil, it is played professionally.
Newent competed with Mitcheldean Juniors, Rednock School and GL1 All-Stars to be Gloucestershire's representatives in Sheffield. They won two games out of three and drew the other, beating Rednock to the top spot on goal difference.
Newent coach Kip Kavallares said: "Futsal should be used by all coaches, whether it be grass-roots or professional clubs.
"We always admire other countries for their technical ability, but in places like Spain and Italy it's compulsory for local clubs to incorporate futsal in their training programmes.
"We're way off of that, but we've made a start."
