Cuba, Guatemala progress to FIFA Futsal World Cup

7.6.08 - Cuba and Guatemala progressed to the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 after defeating Panama and USA, respectively, in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Futsal Championship at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City on Saturday.

Goals by Wilfredo Carbo, Eduardo Morales, Yulier Olivera and Yampier Rodriguez led Cuba to a 4:1 victory over Panama in the first semifinal.

This is the fourth consecutive qualification for the Leones del Caribe to the FIFA event, which is also a CONCACAF Futsal Record.

In the other semifinal, Erick Acevedo, Carlos Merida, Marlon Noj and Jannick Ramirez scored for Guatemala in the 4:0 triumph over the USA.

This will be the Chapines first appearance at a FIFA Futsal World Cup since they hosted the event in 2000.

The 2008 CONCACAF Futsal Championship concludes on Sunday when the USA take on Panama in the third place match as well as the last Confederation berth to the FIFA Futsal World Cup, and then Cuba face Guatemala for the CONCACAF crown.
