Interviú end Murcia's Spanish reign

Saturday 7 June 2008

Two-time UEFA Futsal Cup winners Interviú Fadesa will be back in the competition next season after ending ElPozo Murcia FS's two-year reign as Spanish champions.

Interviú on top
For the fifth time in six seasons the great rivals were matched in the final, with Interviú (then known as Boomerang) having won in 2003, 2004 and 2005 but Murcia holding on to their title in 2007. ElPozo, beaten on penalties by MFK Viz-Sinara Ekaterinburg in the UEFA Futsal Cup final in Moscow, finished eleven points clear of Interviú in the regular season but drew both their league games 4-4 and Murcia were up against when they lost last week's home first encounter 3-1 to goals from Marquinho, Joan and Schumacher.

Victory secure
So Murcia needed to win in Alcalá de Henares tonight to set up a deciding game, but within 18 minutes were 3-0 down with Joan, Schumacher and Jordi Torras on target. The visitors then pulled two back before the break through Vinicius Elías and Wilde, but by the 30-minute mark Torras and Schumacher had extended Interviú's lead. Goalkeeper Luis Amado then made it 6-3 and Joan swiftly added another, and then scored in between two Álvaro strikes as Interviú prevailed 8-5 for their eighth title and to return to Europe after a one-year absence – and end Murcia's three-season stint in the UEFA Futsal Cup.

European rivals
Among Interviú's opponents will be holders Ekaterinburg, former winners MFK Dinamo Moskva and Action 21 Charleroi, 2008 semi-finalists Kairat Almaty, FC Shakhtar Dontesk and ACS Odorheiu Secuiesc, who on Thursday ended CIP Deva's two-year run as Romanian champions. Iceland will also have their first entrants in the shape of Vidir Gardi. That side will enter the Preliminary round draw on 2 July, with games from 9-17 August, and other sides will come in at the Main round from 6-14 September with 12 teams joining the top four seeds in the Elite round draw on 25 September, with the matches from 8-16 November to decide who goes into April's final four.
