Response to fusal tournament encouraging for organisers

THE ground might not have been turfed but the 132 teams that took part in the inaugural Admiral Futsal Championship at Sunway Pyramid showed it did not matter as long as they played a good game of entertaining futsal.

The organisers took public participation as the main factor in holding the championship on heavy-duty tiles, thus sacrificing the usual turf ground.

And, despite this, the response was overwhelming although the organisers had anticipated an 80% turnout.

Stream Enterprise marketing manager Wei Chong Hwa said the championship was a success be-cause it had attracted teams from as far as Penang, Perak and Negri Sembilan.

“We had expected only teams from the Klang Valley but with the presence of outstation teams, it has given us the impetus to hold the tournament annually,” Wei said.

The tournament was divided into three groups: Under-15, Under-18 and an Open category.

Local outfit KFSP showcased their might in both the Under-15 and the Under-18, emerging as the first runners-up in their respective categories.

However, the champion in the Under-15 was JKKK Kampung Melayu Sungei Buloh while Unta-FC was the champions in the Under-18 group. Bayan FC took the honours in the Open category.

All the four teams in each group will advance to the grand finals on Aug 24, which will be held at 1 Utama Phase 2.

The 12 teams from the first round will compete with several more teams in the three age groups in the grand finals for an attempt to win the challenge trophy.

Wei said teams that did not perform well in the first round could also compete in the second round.

Champions: Unta FC
First Runner-up: KFSP

Third Runner-up: Bandtank d’salse

Champions: Bayan FC
First Runner-up: Bertam Ulu
Second Runner-up: Pic A
Third Runner-up: Adigun FC
