VANUATU STRIKE ELEVEN IN MATCHDAY THREE

Tuesday, 10 June 08

Vanuatu smashed their way to the largest win of the OFC Futsal Championships in Fiji, beating New Caledonia 11-1in the opening game of match day three.

Vanuatu coach Marcellino Barthelemy had asked for more clinical finishing from his players following a host of missed chances in their opening two games against Tuvalu and New Zealand.

His request was met by five different players who all found the score sheet for Vanuatu starting with standout performer Derek Malas - 40 seconds into the match.

Goals soon followed to Siardon Mera Talkanamal (2), Jack Vira Ala (4), Louis Dominique (2), Malas, and Sean Wowut Fanai.

New Caledonia managed a consolation goal 15 minutes into the first half but it was a day to forget for Coach Eric Michalak and his squad as nothing fell their way.

Vanuatu looked a re-energized, combative unit and bounced back from yesterday’s heartbreaking last minute loss to New Zealand in the best possible way.

Coach Marcellino Barthelemy re-affirmed his statement yesterday that their tournament is not over.

“I expect more every day and I know that we can still play better than that,” he said.

“I was really happy with the finishing today and I thought we took all our opportunities well.”

“But I know we can still raise it a level, specifically defensively. But I am very happy.”

TAHITI SCORE IMPROBABLE COME FROM BEHIND VICTORY

Tuesday, 10 June

Tahiti scored an amazing 3-2 victory over New Zealand on match day three of the OFC Futsal Championships in Suva, Fiji.

Tahiti were trailing 2-1 with one minute and forty seconds to play before Michel Maihuri scored two goals in the space of 90 seconds to clinch the win in dramatic circumstances.

The game began at a breakneck speed with Tahiti scoring after two minutes through Romeo Patira before New Zealand equalized just five seconds later care of Joshua Martin.

The remainder of the first half was a cagey tense affair with both sides creating good chances but unable to convert them into goals.

Marvin Eakins looked like he had clinched the winner for New Zealand when his finish put the kiwis in front with two minutes left on the clock.

But the Tahitian side – playing at their first ever OFC Futsal championship – were not done and Maihuri scored the equalizer with 1.40 left on the clock.

The celebrations were intense from the Tahitian bench but they were nothing compared to the jubilation shown nine seconds from time when Maihuri headed home his second of the night to steal an improbable victory.

The Tahiti coaching staff were near speechless after the win and head coach Rani Bea stated that he had never given up.

“That was our game. Yesterday we did not play our game but today we showed what we can do. We are still alive in this competition.”

“I always believed. The last two minutes I brought on my four best players because I believed we could do it, and in this moment I am so happy.”

“When the goal came I thought of the country and everyone who we have done so proud. I am just so happy.”

“Tonight we will celebrate but tomorrow we will be back to work.”

New Zealand Coach Erkin Osman was bitterly disappointed with the loss and said the side missed too many chances early in the game.

“We created 25 or so chances and only converted two. You can’t afford to do that.”

“Going 2-1 up with a minute to go, we should have been able to hold on, but we weren’t desperate enough.”

“I put our best defenders on at the end to shut up shop but they still got in behind us, I’m very disappointed.”

SOLOMON'S STRIKE ELEVEN AGAINST FIJI

Tuesday, 10 June 08

The Solomon Island reasserted their dominance on the OFC Futsal Tournament in Suva tonight with a comprehensive 11-6 win over tournament hosts Fiji.

It was match of two contrasting styles, Solomon’s preferring the silky smooth passing and dribbling while Fiji looked for the direct route and tried to out muscle their opponents.

It was the most exhilarating match of the tournament and the packed crowd of 2,500 were witness to a match fuelled on adrenaline that saw both teams heading into the halftime break locked at 4-4.

The Solomon Islands regained their lead twenty seconds into the second half when fan favourite Elliot Ragomo found the back of the net after a skilful run.

The Solomon’s quickly piled on another three goals before Fiji could reply and the score quickly escalated to 11-6 and sent the crowd into overdrive.

Goals for Solomon were scored by Micah Lea’alafa (4), James Egata (2), Francis Lafai, Elliot Ragomo (2); Jack Wetney and Jenan Kapu.

Kamal Hassan scored a hatrick for Fiji alongside two goals from Mira Sahib and one from Alvin Avinesh.

Solomon Island Coach Victor Wai’ia was elated with the result and was happy with the discipline his side showed.

“We sticked to the game plan today and everyone was very committed. The crowd support gives our players such a boost and helps them out so much.”

“I encourage them to entertain the crowd but also remind them that they have to concerntarte for the full duration of the match.

“There are some defensive areas we still need to work on, but tonight I am happy, so far so good.”

Fijian captain Mira Sahib was proud of his sides effort and respected the opponents that they faced tonight.

“We tried our best but their goals just kept coming. They are very skilful and quick and a tough team to compete against.

“When the scores were locked 4-4 at halftime we were told to just give it everything we’ve got and we tried our best.

“But we are not out of the tournament yet, maybe luck will be on our side and results might go our way.”
