SPOILS SHARED BETWEEN TAHITI AND NEW CALEDONIA

Wednesday, 11 June 08

Tahiti fought back from a two goal deficit to draw 2-2 with New Caledonia in the first game of Match Day Four at the OFC Futsal Championships in Suva, Fiji.

It was another spirited fight back from the Tahitian side, whose never-say-die attitude resulted in Jimmy Riaria equalising in the 35th minute after New Caledonia had shot out to a 2-0 lead.

But Tahiti coach Rani Bea will be regretting a host of missed opportunities for his side in the opening five minutes which could have painted a different picture.

Against the run of play New Caledonia opened the scoring in the third minute of the match when Yvan Pourouoro converted from close range after a swift New Caledonia counter attack.

Jerry Iaruel increased the lead for New Caledonia two minutes into the second half and New Caledonia were off to their best start of the tournament.

But the Tahitian spirit should never be counted out and goals to Yvan Pourouoro and Riaria kept alive Tahiti’s shot at the championship.

Tahiti Coach Rani Bea was happy with the spirit and determination of his side to fight back from 2-0 down but disappointed with the result.

“The objective today was to win because we want to go to Brazil and we really needed the three points today.

“We had a lot of chances in the first half that we should have converted but we wasted and I am disappointed with that.

“But I am happy with where we are in the tournament. Next we have Fiji and that will be a very tough test, they are very strong and physical and we will need a lot of movement off the ball to combat their style.”

New Caledonia coach Eric Michalak was philosophical about his sides loss.

“We lost one ball in the middle of the park and they benefited from it and the whole game changed,” he said. “But that’s the sport and the way it goes and now I look ahead to tomorrow’s game against Fiji and think we must win.”

“Tahiti like us were very tired. They played a big game yesterday against new Zealand so I told my team to try and keep them moving and we did it well in the first half.”

“It won’t be easy for us tomorrow against Tuvalu because I know they are getting better day after day.”

AL SAUDI STRIKES SEVEN IN NEW ZEALAND WIN

Wednesday, 11 June 08

New Zealand cruised to a 13-1 win over Tuvalu in the final game of Match Day Four at the OFC Futsal Championships in Suva.

Kiwi captain Bakr Al Saudi went on a scoring rampage opening his tournament account in the second minute and closing it – seven goals later – in the 40th minute.

New Zealand’s shot at winning the championship has slipped after losses to the Solomon Islands and Tahiti but Coach Erkin Osman was delighted that his team finally had something to smile about.

“We talked about finishing this tournament off properly and I plan to do so. We want to go back home with our heads held high.”

It was the most comprehensive win of the tournament so far and six New Zealand players found the scoresheet including Ouadhah Ragued, Marvin Eakins, Gregory O’Connor, Yukin Naidoo and Andrew Gwilliam.

Tuvalu scored a consolation goal in the 35th minute much to the crowds delight and despite their tiring legs the newcomers to the tournament never gave up.

Tuvalu Coach Sami Neemia said his side gave away too many silly fouls in the first half which resulted in goals.

“Our guys are not used to playing every day like this and there were some tired legs out there. But it was good that the guys all earned more experience and now the boys just need to pick themselves up and go again tomorrow.”

TABLE TOPPERS TO CLASH ON MATCH DAY FIVE
Wednesday, 11 June 08, 10:53 PM
Vanuatu finished Match Day Four of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Futsal Championship in first place – equal in points with the Solomon Islands – after beating Fiji 5-2 at the Vodafone Arena in Suva today.

The result sets up an exciting top of the table clash tomorrow night where the winner will be firm favourites to advance to the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Brazil in September.

In other matches New Caledonia and Tahiti fought out a 2-2 draw while New Zealand beat Tuvalu 13-1in the last match of the night.

Solomon Islands and Vanuatu both sit two points clear of third placed Tahiti who fought back from a two goal deficit to earn a point in the opening match of the day.

New Caledonia opened the scoring in the third minute of the match when Yvan Pourouoro converted from close range after a swift New Caledonia counter attack.

Jerry Iaruel increased the lead for New Caledonia two minutes into the second half and it looked as if they were set to collect their first win of the tournament.

But the Tahitian spirit should never be counted out and goals to Yvan Pourouoro and Riaria kept alive Tahiti’s shot at the championship.

For Vanuatu it was Jack Viro Ala who opened the scoring, penetrating the Fijian backline before slotting the ball under Fiji goalkeeper Nishad Wasim Ali.

They added to their lead in the twelfth minute when Derek Malas converted the first of his two goals on the evening.

Fiji looked like they were set to stage a comeback when Sandeep Sanjesh Nair drew one back for the hosts but it only served to inspire Vanuatu into pushing more numbers forward and goals to Louis Dominique, Ala and Malas sealed the win.

Assis Chand scored a late consolation goal for Fiji with three minutes left to play.

New Zealand received a much needed moral booster after their heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Tahiti last night and got it care of a 13-1 victory over Tuvalu.

Kiwi captain Bakr Al Saudi went on a scoring rampage opening his tournament account in the second minute and closing it – seven goals later – in the 40th minute.

It was the most comprehensive win of the tournament so far and six New Zealand players found the scoresheet including Ouadhah Ragued, Marvin Eakins, Gregory O’Connor, Yukin Naidoo and Andrew Gwilliam.

Mahanga Teiaputi scored a consolation goal for Tuvalu in the 35th minute much to the crowds delight and despite their tiring legs the newcomers to the tournament never gave up.
